Asia by Bike Blog. This is the Blog for Tracy and Andrew's cycle journey through Asia, passing 11 countries and peddling a total of 11,000km. Thursday, 19 March 2009. 19 March 2008, Vinh Long, Vietnam. We are writing from the heart of the Mekong Delta, just 3 short days of cycling from Ho Chi Minh: the original end goal for this cycle tour to cross Asia by bike (though not the actual end of our trip of course since we decided to extend). As we are reaching the end of our journey, it is a time for reflect...

Monday, 13 April 2009. 14 April 2009 Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. Since our last blog, we have had a bit of a wildlife extravaganza! Again, I’ve included my diary entry for that day below. One can’t visit rainforest without an introduction to leeches sadly! Andrew has taken a superb photo of a tiger leech reaching out desperately to latch onto a passing leg! Our route wa...

Africa by Motorbike: Namibia

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2010/04/namibia.html

Friday, 9 April 2010. 1932010 – Day 90 – Etosha, Namibia. Although we were stamped into Namibia, our bikes weren’t, so this morning we took it easy to do admin in this next country. Down to the border again to get the carnet stamped and pay vehicle import tax. Next, by consensus, it was off to Wimpey for a fry-up – we really are back in the developed world! 2032010 – Day 91, Etosha, Namibia. An R&R day of the best kind. Very nice toilets at that. 2132010 – Day 92 – Omarura, Namibia. Everything is in thes...

Africa by Motorbike: October 2009

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 21 October 2009. Well I've got a bike. Well I've got a bike. I guess for a novice motorcyclist today was a big day. Today was the day I picked up my motobike and rode it for the first time. So what could be the worst start to your motocycling career? Getting on your first bike for the very first time and the bike won't start! Guess what I was imagining as the engine was turning over without it firing up? I picked up the bike from a great guy called Charlie in Edinburgh who has only had it a co...

Africa by Motorbike: January 2010

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 27 January 2010. Senegal to Mali Border. 1812010 – Day 30 – Near St Louis. I am in Senegal! Your jacket, sunglasses and money – particularly money. The police wave you over wearing their ‘Chips’ reflective sunglasses and try to be an intimidating presence with their large, athletic, stature. They’re just working out how to get some money out of the European ATM – no receipts, of course. 1912010 – Day 31 – Near Saint Louis. 2012010 - Day 32 - West of Mali. I motor-biked to Mali! The Senegal bor...

Africa by Motorbike: December 2009

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, 24 December 2009. Heading for the sun. The trip has finally begun! Four days ago Tracy and I set off from Edinburgh on my motorbike heading south for Christmas in Guildford, after which we will be heading to Portsmouth on the 27th for a ferry bound for Northern Spain. The week before we left was spent scanning the weather forecast trying to work out how to get to London without:. A) Freezing to death. B) Sliding on the snow and ice. I also made a visit to the house we moved to, in which my moth...

Africa by Motorbike: Congo into Democratic Republic of Congo

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2010/03/congo-into-democratic-republic-of-congo.html

Friday, 26 March 2010. Congo into Democratic Republic of Congo. I've been editing most diary entries but this one is coming to you untampered-with - partly because I don't have much time or energy, but mostly because each entry is so fascinating (well, I think so! So take your time - maybe you won't read it all in a one-er (it's rather long) - and enjoy it. He is less than a week from Cape Town and the finish at the Cape itself. I'm flying out to meet him next week (! The Boat Club is an ex-pat playgroun...

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Friday, 26 March 2010. 1332010 – Day 84 – Sonongolo, DRC. I pushed my bike under a tree and talked about it to Rouven (mechanic) and Daniel (an electrical engineer). They told me to try and start the engine again. Miraculously it started once, started twice and didn’t smoke. Unbelievable! It must have been all the rain affecting the ignition causing a one-off spark. What a relief! 1432010 – Day 85 – Tomboko, Angola. We’re staying in another Catholic Mission tonight, but in a new country! I’m enjoyi...

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 2 November 2009. I thought I'd just give a quick update on what is going on at the moment with regards to the trip planning. Well there is a start date! Planning is going well. Things I've recently done include:. Been to the travel clinic and got my jabs and anti malarial. Bought travel insurance (Irvine Cambell). Got a new passport. Got my driving licence. Started buying stuff I need from my kit list. Things I haven't done yet but should have:. Learn to speak French. Posted by Asia by Bike.

Africa by Motorbike: February 2010

http://africabymoto.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 24 February 2010. Mammoth blog entry coming up - communications through Benin and Nigeria were very poor - mostly reduced to occasional texts, usually using the Swiss mobile phone (thank you! So the following diary extracts only came through the day before yesterday - so there's a back log. Andrew is currently safely in Cameroon where he is sorting visas, will soon be fixing the bike (parts are almost all there now) and enjoying Pete's beers, pool and the first salad he's eaten since Spain!
