Living a simple, alternative life. Monthly Archives: December 2013. Meat, Markets and Christmas. December is upon us already, but up until now the weather has been incredibly mild which has allowed us to carry on working for much longer than expected. We have only just dug out the last of our potatoes! The winter wheat is in and has made a great start, as you can see from the few bare patches the local pheasants have enjoyed it already! We do plan to dig a few more over the winter, ready for the spring.

Life at Brookwood Shire. The Harvest Continues…. July 21, 2015. We had a lovely June this year and the cool weather plants all did well. We have been feasting on huge heads of broccoli, sweet tender lettuce, delicious peas, and bountiful kale, chard and spinach. But July turned hot. The spinach bolted as did the lettuce, and the peas faded. The broccoli is still producing some and the kale and chard are fine. But now the hot weather plants are coming.
