Thursday, December 6, 2012. Madness and a road project. I was travelling in the Tousem subdivision of Tamenglong district of Manipur. A young and probably mad IAS officer has decided to involve his community and build a road that connects people of the Zeliangrong community and gets them closer. That was our story. This photograph was clicked in the remote Phoklong village in Tousem. The village elders from the Zemi Naga tribe were eagerly waiting for us, the visitors. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sunday, January 6, 2013. Early morning at a village in the Tamenglong district of Manipur. December 2012. And then this in one corner (below). And this in another (below). A mad green soul. In December 2012 we also travelled to Jorhat in Assam to meet Jadab Mulai Payeng, a green hero. For the last thirty three years of his life he has been crossing this river and planting trees near an isolated sandbar of the Bramhaputra river and has single-handedly given rise to a forest. Sunday, January 6, 2013. From 1984 development promises have engulfed Loktak lake in Manipur- one of the largest freshwater lakes in India. First came a hydel project and now the government wants to evict fisherfolk to save the lake. Photograph taken by Tomba on location during the filming in November 2012. A short Loktake Video Report. Sunday, February 24, 2013. Nagaland, before elections. We travelled to Nagaland for a report before the Assembly elections in the state's 50th year. This photograph of cadres belonging to the NSCN-IM, a Naga rebel group in a ceasefire with the Government of India for the last 15 years, was taken during an earlier visit to their headquarter near Dimapur. This is the link to the Nagaland news documentary. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Currently Reading/ Not Reading/ Re-reading. Chitti of a girl.

Sunday, August 29, 2010. On a train to North Cachar. After Nagaland was in Delhi for a while. And then travelled to North Cachar in the hill district of Assam. What a fascinating train journey in the metre gauge line! More on the journey and North Cachar in the next posts. We got back to Imphal. Met people from the valley. Most of them disgusted with this economic blockade ( which was on then) and also with New Delhi. Here we are talking to Rajkumar Ranendrajit. Friday, August 13, 2010. June rains in Ukh...

Just Curious: A Tale of Two Cities
http://shonedeep.blogspot.com/2010/06/tale-of-two-cities.html
Jun 2, 2010. A Tale of Two Cities. Last month when I was in Calcutta, I happened to travel down that much travelled path toward the Indian Museum after many years. As my cab approached Chowringhee I looked out, hoping to see the building do what it had so many times during my years in that city. I saw nothing. Actually, I saw a gigantic slab of concrete suspended in mid-air. A flyover had grown in between my museum and me. Her tree has been felled to make way for the flyover; looking out entails a strang...

Just Curious: Translating Tagore
http://shonedeep.blogspot.com/2009/10/translating-tagore.html
Oct 19, 2009. Arijit Sen sent me this poem by Tagore. I have translated it as follows. Amidst images, in their still silence. You rest your steady stare. The tale, that unto itself tells,. Its own uneventful, mute past;. Clouding the mind's open sky. Lets rain pitiful despair. Monday, October 19, 2009. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Just Curious: Tunganath
http://shonedeep.blogspot.com/2009/08/tunganath.html
Jun 8, 2009. This summer I was at Chopta, in the Garhwal Himalayas. From there, I made the short trek to Tunganath (literally: The Lord of the Lofty Heights). Tunganath, at 12,072 feet, is possibly the highest temple (as opposed to shrine) in India. And it is one of the five kedars. The most important of which is, a few valleys away, at Kedarnath. Of the Chaukhamba (lit: Four Pillars: chau. Pillar). Thankfully, before the monsoon arrives in the mountains, good days are aplenty. Monday, June 08, 2009.
