Tuesday, April 26, 2011. The Decades project was a fun, hands-on way of researching and presenting information about various decades within the United States. We had groups from the turn of the century, 1920's, and the 1940's through the 1970's. Everyone dressed up in costumes reflecting the dress of their period and created posters, slide shows, and brought artifacts that highlighted important information about their decade. It wasn't called the Roaring Twenties for nothing! Live, Love, Learn.

So apparently from classroom discussions, we have learned that many active teachers "don't have time" or find it "difficult" to integrate Social Studies education in the classroom. While creating cohesive, well-rounded and integrated lessons is quite challenging, I would find it difficult to create some sort of Social Studies activity that doesn't at least tie in with Language Arts somehow. Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Social Studies for Kids. Is a pretty general site that students can use, but also provides some good resources for the teachers as well. As you can see on the home page, it has information on relevant holidays (Happy Groundhog Day! And "this week in history." Personally, I was happy to see the book reviews for social studies related books. It's not a huge list, but has some interesting selections for fiction and nonfiction books for children ages 4-18. Thursday, March 17, 2011. In Honor of Women. I only found out recently that March is Women's History Month. When I looked for more information about it today, I found out that it has been since 1987. I graduated high school in 2001, and looking back, I can't remember one instance in which notable female historical figures were discussed in-depth, let alone celebrated during any specific time period.
