I did not make a beeline to the Canadian Embassy. Because that would just be wrong, but when I saw the colours, I have to admit it was pretty nice to see the familiar red and white; to have a sense of connection that is based on nothing more than geography. I have a suspicion I know where this might have happened. When we went up to the mountains towards the end of our stay in Almaty, we traversed some rugged roads where a LOT of the Kazakhs liked to go for a weekend out of town.
