Every day is the first day. Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Let it never be said that profs are without a sense of humour. Today we cut out and dissected Blanche's heart. There are too many places to go with this, and I don't know where to start. Just one of the wonderfully ironic things that happen when you're in the cardio block on Valentine's day. Given what I've seen this morning, I hope any hearts you are given today are either metaphorical, or chocolate. :). Wednesday, February 07, 2007. My friends a...

Every day is the first day. Tuesday, December 26, 2006. I love you, Neil Gaiman. I love you for writing Sherlock Holmes slash fanfiction in the world of H.P. Lovecraft. I mean, I really. Answerboy's parents pleasantly surprised the heck out of me by getting me Fragile Things. For Christmas. There was an audible intake of breath as I opened the parcel. (Baby, you had something to do with this, right? Hope all readers had a merry Christmas, if celebrated, and if not, a nice day anyway. :). Last weekend I w...

Every day is the first day. Thursday, September 28, 2006. Anyway. The book is called A Book of Luminous Things. Seeing as how it's a poetry prize. This may have been the very last time my mother influenced my reading habits, and in this case, I'm glad I listened. The book still isn't quite dry, so while it's still in sight on my desk and not out of mind on my bookcase, I've posted a few of my favourites under the "words" section. Monday, September 25, 2006. The plague has come. Tuesday, September 19, 2006.

Every day is the first day. Monday, January 29, 2007. Blanchie lost her head. I'm glad that I read through the anatomy lab instructions on my way to school this morning. I usually do, but I didn't realize that I had a lab today until about 9 this morning so I wasn't sure I was going to get time. Thank heavens I did, because halfway down the first page, I spied this:. Wait, wait, back up. YOU DECAPITATED BLANCHE? And Blanche's falx cerebri (the sheet of tissue that separates the left and right hemispheres...

Every day is the first day. Sunday, March 04, 2007. Get your own VisualDNA™. Lighting trees in darkness,. Learning new ways from the old,. And making sense of history. And drawing warmth out of the cold. Here you have the random thoughts of Isolde. Somewhat surprised at being a medical student. Not going to let her right brain. Atrophy without a fight. Living in an actual apartment. For the first time. And a would-be writer. Very glad you're here. From The Mixed-Up Files of a Funny Girl.

Every day is the first day. Thursday, July 26, 2007. As is traditional, I reread my journal upon finishing the blank pages today. For the first time ever, there were parts that I didn't actually manage to read again. I went through a couple of awful summers with that book, and there were some things that hurt too much to go through again. There were also some parts where I can now see how immature and melodramatic I was, and those hurt to reread as well, in a different way. The fucking Brazilian consulat...

Every day is the first day. Monday, December 24, 2007. Holiday.from the holidays. Since exams ended on Thursday (and THOSE are now but a distant memory) I've been busy with lots of fun things. Julie and I were at a Sarah Slean concert on the 21st. Sarah is so lovely live - she makes all kinds of weird, dreamy, funny comments and has a great rapport with the audience. And she played some new songs from her forthcoming album, which were gorgeous. And all the stores are closed now! I forgot one of my key ca...

Every day is the first day. Thursday, August 31, 2006. I have about 5 minutes at Answerboy's computer at the moment - just enough time to dash off a couple of lines. I don't have internet in my apartment yet, so I have to come over here every time I want to use it.all part of the disorientation and uprootedness of this week, I guess. Funny that it's called 'orientation week'. Wednesday, August 30, 2006. I am officially beginning this blog on Day One of medical school. So here we go. According to today's ...

Every day is the first day. Saturday, June 30, 2007. See one, do one, teach one. Today was a good day! It's actually good training for something! I also got to start a couple of IVs, the first with a lot of coaching from a very nice nurse, and the second with no coaching at all. I feel good about this. Have a good long weekend, everyone who has one. Thursday, June 28, 2007. The charm dissolves apace. I didn't think I'd be back on here for awhile yet. But William Hutt. He was as intrigued by things not sp...

Every day is the first day. Monday, November 27, 2006. Things the assembled audience may or may not know about me. Tomorrow night. I bought Mary Oliver's A Poetry Handbook. The other day, and feel kind of self-conscious about this. Sometimes I can smell the anatomy lab, even when I'm not there. I can sing along with songs I haven't heard in seven years. I have, still, very serious doubts about the prudence of me becoming any kind of physician. I liked Stranger Than Fiction. I'm off to Starbuck's to study.
