Amateur astronomy through the eyes of a computer geek – Now with Full Frontal Nerdity! WARNING: This FAQ is a work in process. I intend it to be a combination education resource, and buyer’s guide for telescopes. Input in the form of comments or corrections will be gratefully accepted. Considering your first foray into astronomy can be intimidating. The equipment can be expensive, delicate, and difficult to store. Should you jump in and get a telescope? Will a pair of binoculars work for you instead?

Amateur astronomy through the eyes of a computer geek – Now with Full Frontal Nerdity! Reflectors usually use a concave primary mirror to collect and focus incoming light onto a secondary mirror (flat in Newtonian designs, convex in other designs) that in turn reflects the image into an eyepiece for viewing. Lower cost per inch of aperture than offered by refractors and catadioptrics, since mirrors can be produced at less cost than lenses in refractors in medium to large apertures;. Getting back into observational astronomy. And some not-quite-observational-astronomy stuff too). Death from the Skies. After some delay with Amazon.co.uk, it's here! Links to this post. Back in May this year. I noted that the Sun appeared to have gone quiet again, as of 2008-05-08. I'd not observed a sunspot. At that time the quiet period hadn't been quite as long as the one I'd observed towards the end of last year. Had two small spots visible. It's quite nice to see a little blip on my sunspot graphs.

Getting back into observational astronomy. And some not-quite-observational-astronomy stuff too). I'm sure most people know that there's a new Google Earth. Available for download. I'm sure most people know that they've added Mars to the mix. I'm sure most people know that Google Earth has a really simple flight simulator built into it. Well, it's obvious what comes next isn't it? Okay, it's no X-Plane. But it's still kind of fun (let's not mention the fact that the physics are probably totally wrong).

Getting back into observational astronomy. And some not-quite-observational-astronomy stuff too). Finally Seen Comet Lulin. Last night, after waiting most of the week (and being defeated by cloud), I finally got to see comet Lulin. I too finally saw this last night. Cloud was in the way the rest of the week and when there was a gap in the cloud it either was too early for Leo to be up or the gaps were too small for me to find Leo as a starting point. After over a month without a single recorded observation (the last was on 2006-01-24. I've finally had the time and the weather to look at something and record it! Okay, in this case, it was a very brief look at the Sun. But at least it was an observation and I recorded something. File Under: Solar Observing. March 01, 2006 5:15 pm. March 01, 2006 11:45 pm. Getting back into observational astronomy. And some not-quite-observational-astronomy stuff too). Probably not. Or perhaps it reminds you of one, but looks wrong? Chances are, if it does remind you of one, you might be thinking of Leo. That's a screenshot of the rather nifty interactive map of Leo. Using that application you can drag your point of view around and see how Leo would look from other points in space. Neat. If you like that you might also like his interactive map of the nearest 32 stars.
