Clear Skies

Sunday, 14 December 2014. I've never tried to image meteors before, but this was supposed to be a reasonably good shower so I braved the sub-zero temperatures for an hour or so and tried my luck. Of the few hundred images taken, I was chuffed that a handful had the tell tale streaks of meteors. Saturday, 25 October 2014. AR2192 is the largest sunspot of the current solar cycle, and is the largest seen since 2001. Spanning around 124,000 miles across, it could easily ******* the planet Jupiter. Some nice ...

Clear Skies: What a whopper!

http://astrokevskies.blogspot.com/2012/05/what-whopper.html

Monday, 14 May 2012. Sunspot active region 1476 that is. A rare spell of sunny weather over the weekend allowed me to try and capture AR1476, which is the largest active region so far this solar cycle. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've used my camera and I must've been a bit rusty in it's basic operation, leaving the ISO setting on it's previous value of 800. As if I needed that extra bit of sensitivity to record the solar disk! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my Wildlife Blog :-.

Clear Skies: Equipment

http://astrokevskies.blogspot.com/p/equipment.html

When I first bought my 10" scope optics back in the late 70's, I put all my available money into the mirrors, without thinking too much about what I would house them in. I'll worry about that later, I thought! The reality, of course, was that I couldn't afford a tube, or a mount to attach it to. I therefore decided to make my own. The small door near the back of the tube allows access to the primary, which can just be seen covered with a blue plastic cover below (actually the bottom of an old bucket!

Clear Skies: Last Voyage of Atlantis

http://astrokevskies.blogspot.com/2011/07/last-voyage-of-atlantis.html

Monday, 11 July 2011. Last Voyage of Atlantis. The very final Space Shuttle journey into orbit. By good fortune, CalSky.com was predicting a pre-docking transit with the centreline crossing England just north of Corby for early afternoon on Sunday. So, armed with camera's, scopes, laptops and a sat-nav, my mate Dave and I headed off in good time to set-up. Using Google maps, we'd identified a convenient entry into a field just north of the village of King's Cliffe, so off we went. Size of ISS = 60.1".

Clear Skies: Northern Lights

http://astrokevskies.blogspot.com/2013/02/northern-lights.html

Sunday, 17 February 2013. Tromso, Northern Norway, 69 degrees north. Saturday 9th - The website forecast I'd been following suggested the aurora was going to be brighter than the previous night so we were getting excited as evening fell. Unfortunately the clouds rolled in. Despite driving to darker sites away from Tromso, the skies didn't clear beyond a few small breaks and we sadly didn't see any sign of the lights, which was disappointing. Wild Times: Colourful Characters

http://astrokev.blogspot.com/2012/09/colourful-characters.html

Friday, 7 September 2012. A selection of the more colourful bird life I managed to image. A group of 5 Bee-eaters entertained me for ages at Acheleia reedbeds, the only time I saw these wonderful birds during the whole trip. Rollers, on the other hand, were quite regular sightings, both in the farmland around the villa and on the wires around Loukaides chicken farm; exactly as predicted by Dave Gosney's "Finding Birds." (perhaps he pays the farmer). It does what it says on the tin. A few more BOPs.

Wild Times: Swifts

http://astrokev.blogspot.com/2011/05/swifts.html

Saturday, 28 May 2011. Nice to see the swifts circling around the village a few evenings ago, but mighty difficult to get decent images of them. Wild Times: Kensington Cliffs

http://astrokev.blogspot.com/2012/09/kensington-cliffs.html

Thursday, 6 September 2012. Fantastic site just West of the Akrotiri peninsula. The cliffs themselves were somewhat un-nerving, having no protection from the sheer drop of several hundred feet, but I crawled as close to the edge of the crumbly rocks as I dared, in temperatures of 38'C. Unfortunately, there was no sign of the hoped-for roosting Griffon Vultures, but the incredibly close views of Eleanora's Falcons soaring and wheeling on the thermals were spectacular. Wild Times: Colourful garden tick !

http://astrokev.blogspot.com/2011/06/colourful-garden-tick.html

Wednesday, 15 June 2011. British species can be colourful when seen up close in the right light, but come on! Clearly an escape, this marvellous creation was putting on a dazzling show in the afternoon sun. It stayed around for quite a while, spending time on the feeders and taking the odd drink from the garden pond between rest periods in the neighbouring bushes. Through the wonders of internet bird forums, I'm told it's an Eastern Rosella, native of SE Australia. Checking the time on the garden sundial.

Wild Times: Dawn Chorus

http://astrokev.blogspot.com/2011/05/dawn-chorus.html

Friday, 13 May 2011. Went out yesterday morning just before dawn on an unsuccesful astronomy imaging session. After watching a stunning sunrise I did a bit of birding before driving back for breakfast. Lots of dawn chorus activity with some good birds on show - my first Little Owls of the year and a range of open country birds. This Whitethroat put on a particularly good show. 16 May 2011 at 14:57. Welcome to the UKNHB webring, lovely pics of the Whitethroat, the second pic is a cracker, Linda.
