The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass instrument is a high altitude long duration balloon experiment which has flown several times in Antarctica (see here. It has a combination of hadronic calorimetry, charge identification, and a transition radiation detector (TRD) for measurements of high energy cosmic ray nuclei. Chicago built and operated the TRD system for the first flight, CREAM-1 in 2004. More details are on this site. But some of the links are out of date.

The Very EneRgetIc Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is located at Mt Hopkins in southern Arizona. It makes observations of gamma-rays from 100GeV-10TeV energies by collecting light from the small air showers they produce interacting in the upper atmosphere.
