The Mind of Dr. Pion: January 2012
http://doctorpion.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
The Mind of Dr. Pion. Simplifying the complex and complexifying the rest: Ravings on physics, politics, education, motoring, and the Harvard comma. Wednesday, January 4, 2012. First Day of Class. Amusing and thought-provoking blog about first day of class rituals. From Gradhacker at IHE. I usually waste way too much time on the syllabus and am fighting to get pro-forma nonsense down under 10 minutes. I want to do some physics on the first day. More detailed comments later, but I also like to give a quiz.

The Mind of Dr. Pion: Followup on Chinese engineering problems

The Mind of Dr. Pion. Simplifying the complex and complexifying the rest: Ravings on physics, politics, education, motoring, and the Harvard comma. Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Followup on Chinese engineering problems. I'm a big fan of the book "To Engineer is Human", so I can't be too hard on the people involved in the investigation of a bullet train crash in China. (See my previous article. Here's to hoping the same people aren't working on their aircraft. Posted by Doctor Pion. Due South of Michigan.

The Mind of Dr. Pion. Simplifying the complex and complexifying the rest: Ravings on physics, politics, education, motoring, and the Harvard comma. Friday, August 16, 2013. Facebook makes people feel worse? As we approach the time of year when students leave home without really leaving, because they remain tethered via Facebook. That makes reports of this new study. The Mind of Dr. Pion. Simplifying the complex and complexifying the rest: Ravings on physics, politics, education, motoring, and the Harvard comma. Thursday, August 15, 2013. Fascinating article today in IHE. Amusing because getting students to do most of these things strikes me as wildly optimistic! And some are utterly irrelevant to science or engineering majors. And a Happy Birthday to that rather famous son of an electrical equipment salesman. When I was looking up a link, I noticed that it has been over a year since I've written anything here on this blog! Average Professor: December 2008
http://averageprofessor.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 12, 2008. I have decided I am done with this colleague. The last straw for me was very minor, just another example of his strange behavior. My particular little research area. Which is why I'm a co-PI on both projects. Although, have I mentioned that I am not technically a co-PI on the project with Dr. M? So I said to the writer, there's a good bit of overlap, both have a part that deal with [my research], just with slightly different [nuance]. So the primary connection of his project to...

Average Professor: Dr. M, again.
http://averageprofessor.blogspot.com/2008/05/dr-m-again.html
Tuesday, May 20, 2008. Dr M, again. So, this guy. He is requesting (demanding? I feel very pushed around. Selection of an advisor should be between student and advisor, and not be demanded by a third party. Right? The departmental graduate program committee chair advised me that if it's not going to pose any clear advantage to the grad student, then, we should not play games with his committee, and should leave things as they are. Average Professor: March 2009
http://averageprofessor.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 10, 2009. The other day I ran across a recent journal article that was relevant to one of my grad students, so I forwarded it to her in case she had not seen it already. I have never had this specific struggle, but I do understand the struggle to find an internal consistency in your attitudes and philosophy on life. Particularly as a very new assistant professor, I felt some of this type of friction. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Im recently tenured associate professor at...
