A Tale of Two Literary Cities

A Tale of Two Literary Cities. Monday, 24 May 2010. Ode to the Odd Ones. One of our regular customers came in to the store yesterday. A perfectly nice, normal guy who pops in now and then, buys mostly non-fiction. He brought his book up to the counter and as my colleague put the sale through, he peeled off the price sticker. 'Oh, would you like it gift wrapped? Would he spit it out, with a sheepish smile or a slight air of surprise? Saturday, 15 May 2010. The Kids Are Alright - Again. Who knew babysittin...

http://ataleoftwoliterarycities.blogspot.com/2010/01/i-read-much-of-night-and-go-south-in.html

A Tale of Two Literary Cities. Monday, 4 January 2010. I read much of the night, and go south in the winter. Is everyone sick of the lists, round ups and reviews that litter book pages and websites at this time of year? So here are 9 of my favourite reads from '09. I'll be making an effort to read more genre fiction and non-fiction this year (there's a graphic novel gazing up at me reproachfully from the floor by my bed, I. Open it this month.) - so any and all recommendations gratefully received! An int...

A Tale of Two Literary Cities: Chain reactions vs independent types

http://ataleoftwoliterarycities.blogspot.com/2009/11/chain-reactions-vs-independent-types.html

A Tale of Two Literary Cities. Wednesday, 25 November 2009. Chain reactions vs independent types. Since my last post, which was shamefully long ago in blogosphere terms, I have acquired a second bookselling job in order to swell the coffers, which took a serious knock in the transition period! This has been good news. I do promise to make this blog more readable, just bear with me while I get through the next few weeks! 27 November 2009 at 08:03. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Tale of Two Literary Cities: November 2009

http://ataleoftwoliterarycities.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

A Tale of Two Literary Cities. Monday, 30 November 2009. The future of bookselling? Incredibly sad news this week that Borders UK has gone into administration. The chain's fortunes had really taken a nosedive over the last few years with a resulting drop-off in quality, and the end has really been a long time coming but it is a horrible situation for the staff and it is always sad to see bookshops close their doors. Independents usually have very few staff, and a much lower turnover. And next time yo...

A Tale of Two Literary Cities: September 2009

http://ataleoftwoliterarycities.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

A Tale of Two Literary Cities. Sunday, 27 September 2009. The Great Unknown Southern Land. I met other like-minded volunteers and staff; chaired events with Australian and international authors; saw plays, read books, drank flat whites and local. And knew I’d be back. So I am now tying up some books in a polkadot knapsack and taking myself to the Great Unknown Southern Land. I’m arriving on the 12th October in pursuit of a little sun, a little wine and lots of literary activity. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Inkling: August 2010

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Tuesday, August 3, 2010. À la recherche du temps perdu (or, Same Same but Different). It's the strangest thing, coming back to a place you once knew so well, after a long stretch of time. The streets, the shops, the bars and restaurants, the faces of the people, the smells and tastes, the air itself - it's all somehow so very familiar, yet brand new. But you don't live here anymore, you. I have found that I. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Lover of bo...

The Inkling: The Muddle-Headed Wombat Playing Beatie Bow in the South

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2011/02/muddle-headed-wombat-playing-beatie-bow.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Thursday, February 10, 2011. The Muddle-Headed Wombat Playing Beatie Bow in the South. Shortly after hearing of the death of Ruth Park in December last year I was browsing the bookshelves in a very small second hand store. Tucked in willy nilly on the non-fiction shelf was a battered and well-loved copy of The Harp in the South. Apt, I thought. I do adore the books. But somehow I had never before read The Harp. Change is that some aspects of life ...

The Inkling: An Office

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2011/04/office.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Wednesday, April 6, 2011. The tea room encourages us to believe in Peace and Harmony. And teaches us how to respond to a bomb threat. There's a man three cubicles over who I have never met. He speaks very loudly on the phone and calls everyone by their first name repeatedly. He says things like, "It's a robust policy, Paul. But Paul, I think we need to think about synergy and work together to achieve strategic implementation, Paul". I am the grand...

Girl with flannelette shirt and army surplus bag to girl with half-shaved head and black framed glasses:. Don't ya think it's funny how people wanna be all, like, ironic. April 6, 2011 at 10:59 PM. The Inkling: June 2010

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Monday, June 14, 2010. Pretty much everyone I know has at least one of those cross-cultural stories up their sleeve. Or at least anyone who’s ever been overseas, which is, frankly, most people these days. I also had, for the longest time, gotten on the backs of my American friends about pronouncing the word “buoy” (as in, a floating thing in the sea) like “boo-ee” instead of “boy”. 8220;THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS! Until I lo...

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2011/04/why-i-can-never-get-pay-tv.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Sunday, April 24, 2011. Why I can never get Pay TV. The LifeStyle channel - Location, Location, Location. A Place in the Sun. Grand Designs, Homes Under the Hammer. Fantasy Homes by the Sea. The list goes on and on. It's like an orgy of home-buying Britishness, and i just can't drag myself away from it. Also, 16 and Pregnant. Thanks to MTV and Don't Tell the Bride. On LifeStyle You. Yes, I really am that pathetic. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://hannahtheinkling.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Saturday, November 6, 2010. Have currently got Antonia Fraser's marvellous Mary Queen of Scots. On the go, and have just finished the new Sevenwaters book from Juliet Marillier, Seer of Sevenwaters. A queen cops a whole lot of bad luck in Scotland, an Irish druid-in-training. also cops a whole lot of bad luck. 4 out of 5 stars. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I've got a feeling this is going to be one of those days. Monday, April 18, 2011. I dug the clapping as much as I dug Jesus. As mentioned previously, I have just been reading Benjamin Law's hilarious The Family Law. Benjamin is a rather funny fellow. He muses on life, family, growing up, and being a young gay man of Malaysian/Hong Kongian/Chinese heritage. I can't say I exactly relate to this final aspect, but there are so many things in this book that had me going "oh my gosh, YES! Herewith, the excerpt:.

Underbelly - A Tale of Two Kitties. Oct 29, 2009. The Ravenous Growling Beast. Oh no, she's going to get it out from behind the door. I hate that door. Why does it have a name? A collection of stories, poems, and ramblings about love. What these years have done…. December 24, 2016. I stood outside your door and listened to the way you played guitar.
