In 1998 the Governor signed legislation creating the Atchafalaya Basin Program within the Department of Natural Resources. Eight state agencies, five federal agencies and a handful of environmental groups combined forces in a unique undertaking to maintain the Atchafalaya Basin as the asset it is to Louisiana. Their mission is to ".conserve, restore, and enhance (where possible) the natural habitat and give all people the opportunity to enjoy the Atchafalaya Experience.".

Over the years I have come to care greatly about this significant wetland and its inhabitants. It is a special place to me as well as to the people of Louisiana. It should be a special place to us all, for this 1.4 million-acre soggy Atchafalaya swampland has been giving itself to us unselfishly since the beginning of man.
