Work for Sale Gallery pages. Tuesday, 6 October 2009. Berries, berries, berries! My father came to visit, so I dragged him out in the rain to help me pick berries! We picked rowan berries and sloes, both destined for a couple of nights in the freezer to simulate a frost, before being made into jellies. The crab apples will go in with the berries too, while the haws are cooking at this moment on the stove, in an attempt to make Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's 'Haw-sin sauce'. I'll let you know how it goes!

As Midsummer moves into 'high summer', I have continued to walk, snatching moments in the late evening, when I can find a little breathing space from the chores and stress of life. I am constantly enchanted by the ever changing play of light across this landscape,. The low evening light turns everything to gold. Even the humble nettle appears jewel encrusted in the light of the setting sun. I try, endlessly, to translate this light show into paintings!

The hard, aromatic fruit has to be cooked, with lots of sugar as it is very sharp, but then it has an amazing flavour, slightly reminiscent of eastern spices, and the jam, which turns pinkish orange has a taste somewhere between mango and apricot - divine! Child, we used to eat beech nuts in the Autumn, gathering them on the way home from school, and peeling the little shiny cases, to eat the raw nut inside. It was these that hop shoots reminded me of. Nettle and Hop Top Pesto. Basil is the obvious herb choice for this, but my seedlings are only just germinating. I used golden marjoram and thyme. My smallest son, who is suspicious of anything green, ate two helpings of this! 1 colanderful of nettle tops.
