Atheist Mum

Tuesday, March 25, 2008. And while I'm in the mood. Did anyone read Giles Fraser's ridiculous piece. In the Guardian a couple of weeks back, having a go at parents who use euphemisms when talking to their children about death? He takes issue with phrases such as 'gone away' and 'fallen asleep' while suggesting that it is only in church that children can expect to hear the truth about death 'know that you are dust and to dust you shall return'. Atheist Mum: February 2007

http://atheistmum.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 22, 2007. Platitude For The Day. Given that the BBC don't look like they're going to be changing their minds any time soon, a couple of initiatives have been set up lately which might be of interest. The first is the Think Humanist Thought For the Day. Set up by the Humanist Society of Scotland. I'm a bit late in twigging on to this they ran a series of podcasts from 12th to 17th February, coinciding with 'Darwin week' but relieved that they have a play again facility on the website.

Atheist Mum: October 2006

http://atheistmum.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Like the rest of the population, it seems, I've been mulling over this veil malarkey and it seems to me it's rather a complex issue, no? I thought reading Snow, by Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk, about veil-wearing and suicide in a remote Turkish town, might shed some light on the subject for me, but enjoyable though it is, it isn't making things any clearer. Atheist Mum: November 2006

http://atheistmum.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Well, there's no getting away from it, Christmas is well and truly on its way, in all its mawkish glory, and the usual whingeing on about putting Christ back into Christmas is as loud as ever. Not that he was there in the first place, of course, Yuletide celebrations having been going on for quite some time before the god squad got their sweaty paws on them. I can't tell you how amused I was to read in the National Secular Society pamphlet, Our Pagan Christmas. I'm sorry, bu...

Atheist Mum: Fancy dress?

http://atheistmum.blogspot.com/2007/11/fancy-dress.html

Thursday, November 29, 2007. Nothing to do with atheism, but on the annual trawl of the internet for Yuletide gift inspiration this. Absolutely cracked me up. Can you imagine the look on the face of the kid who gets a barrister fancy dress costume? And how on earth are you supposed to dress up as an architect? Tempted by the suffragette, but only if you end up looking like the mum in Mary Poppins. Sorry, Raising Kids. Posted by Atheist Mum @ 2:46 pm. Knock, knock; anybody home? View my complete profile.

Class of 70, 74, 79 and 81 : Greasley Beauvale and Beyond. Thursday, April 05, 2007. For some reason our brains seem to have set aside a special place to remember this stuff, (as opposed to say, what we should be buying at the grocery store, or what our current next door neighbour is called! How it will pan out is anyone's guess (particularly ours) and we’re likely to stray off into other things too, like a new obsession with 70s Top of the Pops and 80s videos on YouTube . A suitcase-sized depository of bizarre ruminations and untenable opinions. October 12, 2013. Can we please bury philosophy? It’s starting to smell. Part II. So when some philosophers accuse Krauss and others like him of scientism , realism , anti-positivism or insert-name-here-ism , I think we should consider these labels smokescreens for hiding smelly arguments that the philosopher is too embarrassed to state baldly.
