Looking Out from the Panopticon: July 2015
http://benthamorfoucault.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Looking Out from the Panopticon. Saturday, July 18, 2015. Garbage In, Garbage Out. In the aftermath of our twitter chat. On robograding, Scott Petri. Tweeted at me this story. From IHD about turnitin. The gist of the story is that turnitin doesn't work as well as google searching for catching plagiarism. The story is based on a study by a UT librarian, Dr. Susan Schorn. The study is a classic case of Garbage In, Garbage Out research. Here's why:. 1 The amount of cheating doesn't matter. TL;DR Schorr does...

nobody sasses a girl in glasses: Regional differences in breaking records
http://foureyedgremlin.blogspot.com/2015/07/regional-differences-in-breaking-records.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. Regional differences in breaking records. Sayeth the San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego has broken just about every record it has for July," said Roger Pierce, a National Weather Service forecaster. "It was a pretty amazing weekend.". And what exactly is meant by "pretty amazing" in San Diego? Posted by Miss Self-Important. Yay for rain, though, right? The constant downpours have abated a bit here, so win-win. Looking Out from the Panopticon: SHEG sees the world... with blinders on.
http://benthamorfoucault.blogspot.com/2015/06/sheg-sees-world-with-blinders-on.html
Looking Out from the Panopticon. Monday, June 15, 2015. SHEG sees the world. with blinders on. It's been a while since I've done a Weinberg watch and SHEG has launched new world history resources. And bonus, I'm teaching ancient world history next year so what better time to check in on SHEG and see what they are up to. Unfortunately, the results are new sources, same story. I looked at the SHEG lesson plans for Hummurabi's Code. June 18, 2015 at 10:34 PM. I have read a certain number of history textbook...

Looking Out from the Panopticon. Thursday, June 11, 2015. Personal Learning Networks that are In Person. I had a three hour faculty meeting today that was empowering and energizing. That's happened to me before exactly never times. Among the topics discussed was the fact that we were going to be doing in-house personal learning networks using the instructional rounds model. Given this article. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). SHEG sees the world. with blinders on. Guest post AP US History.

nobody sasses a girl in glasses: The greatest alumni note of all time
http://foureyedgremlin.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-greatest-alumni-note-of-all-time.html
Saturday, July 25, 2015. The greatest alumni note of all time. I've mentioned in the past. Of experience in the field of alumni-note reading is the best alumni note I have ever seen, composed by someone who appears not to have even graduated from Chicago:. A contemporary Tellus the Athenian, altered by modernity but not beyond recognition. Posted by Miss Self-Important. Virgil T. Morant. Http:/ www.axpow.org/files/bulletins/bullcur.pdf. I was also fascinated to see this New York Times. Arts and Letters D...

nobody sasses a girl in glasses: Eliot, Daniela Deronda
http://foureyedgremlin.blogspot.com/2015/07/eliot-daniela-deronda.html
Saturday, July 04, 2015. Eliot, Daniela Deronda. The Toast once summarized all English novels. With the phrase "fraught seating arrangements," which is a very accurate description of large parts of this book (as also of every book by Henry James, and a lot of Jane Austen, especially Mansfield Park. Which is may be the epitome of her virtue revealed through extremely subtle gestures that only someone of extraordinary sensitivity could notice). But the precise nothingness that it showed revealed everything.

nobody sasses a girl in glasses: Academic conferences at tropical resorts, a follow-up
http://foureyedgremlin.blogspot.com/2015/05/academic-conferences-at-tropical.html
Saturday, May 02, 2015. Academic conferences at tropical resorts, a follow-up. This post follows the previous entirely by coincidence, not because I am constantly thinking about conferences. But remember that, last spring, I proposed the brilliant idea. That academic conferences should be held at all-inclusive tropical resorts? Well, this weekend, an NYT essay vindicates my suggestion. nobody sasses a girl in glasses: Department of Bad Ideas: Academic conferences should be held at all-inclusive tropical resorts
http://foureyedgremlin.blogspot.com/2014/05/department-of-bad-ideas-academic.html
Sunday, May 18, 2014. Department of Bad Ideas: Academic conferences should be held at all-inclusive tropical resorts. You can't really tell from the photo, but there is an artificial waterfall between me and the view. Cabo's beaches are mostly not swimmable, which makes me wonder how it became such a destination for tourists. I (once again) wish I knew how to fish so I could catch marlins though. Marlins! Like the Old Man and the Sea! Isn't there some remedy for this inefficiency? Jacob T. Levy. Theres o...
