Jazzlanta: December 2009
http://jazzlanta.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Live at Churchill Grounds. I just put the finishing touches on the liner notes for trumpeter Joe Gransden's forthcoming CD,. Live at Churchill Grounds. This is Joe's second release for Hot Shoe Records. And features a combination of members from his first band in Atlanta and his current group. Those of you who were at Churchill Grounds June 19 and 20 might even be able to hear your own clap on the disc, which should be ready for release in January. Tuesday, December 1, 2009.

Jazzlanta: January 2010
http://jazzlanta.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Friday, January 29, 2010. Jazz fest update on ArtsCriticATL. Today I spoke with Nnena Nchege at the Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs about the 2010 Atlanta Jazz Festival's return to Piedmont Park. Our conversation can be found at ArtsCriticATL. Here's the money quote:. We are ecstatic that we get to be back in Piedmont Park," she said. "We are working very hard to roll out a festival that is of the same quality that we've always done.". Saturday, January 16, 2010. The trumpeter has some work to do befo...
Jazzlanta: June 2009

Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Take Five: A weekly jazz sampler's exploration of the beer-jazz connection. Led me to wonder what beer (or wine) would pair well with local jazz offerings. Would a refreshing Sweetwater Georgia Brown complement the laid-back funk of Mace Hibbard's "Reverend Boots 'n' Ball"? Does drinking a beer brewed at Twain's taste better when accompanied by a Joe Gransden improvisation? What do you drink when listening to Trey Wright's Thinking Out Loud. Saturday, June 13, 2009. The support fr...

Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Wynton's missed deadline (again). Breaking news via artscriticATL: Wynton's performance of Blues Symphony. For the third time. Instead of debuting the hour-long work on Nov. 19 at 8 pm, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will instead play the first two movements of the piece. The full shebang will be performed at Morehouse College on January 14. No word on refunds. Thursday, November 5, 2009. Friday: Jeff Hamilton Trio. In September, Hamilton's group issued Symbiosis. An album ful...
Jazzlanta: Maralis symphony review on ArtsCriticATL
http://jazzlanta.blogspot.com/2010/01/maralis-symphony-review-on.html
Saturday, January 16, 2010. Maralis symphony review on ArtsCriticATL. My review of Thursday night's ASO concert and the performance of five movements from Wynton Marsalis' new symphony can be found at ArtsCriticATL. Marsalis' composition has a lot of good ideas, but there are simply too many thoughts swirling around in each movement. Here's the tail end of the review, which sums up my feelings on the work:. Coach bags on sale. September 27, 2010 at 11:34 PM. May 8, 2012 at 11:02 AM. Dante's Down the Hatch.

Jazzlanta: October 2009
http://jazzlanta.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Piedmont, jazz and the AJC. The city announced yesterday that the ban on festivals at the newly thirst-quenched Piedmont Park has been eviscerated, setting the stage for a triumphant 2010 Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park. The AJC has the story. This is good news, of course, because Woodruff Park (site of the 2008 event) wasn't cutting it, and the 2009 venue wasn't much better. But something in the AJC article irked me a bit. Read on:. Maybe a return to Piedmont means a re...
Jazzlanta: August 2009
http://jazzlanta.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 28, 2009. Some of us still buy CDs. Stubborn in my quest, I recently had to go to three different retailers before I found a copy of the just-released Roy Hargrove Big Band album, Emergence. This past weekend, I procured a turntable from my future father-in-law. Turns out, it's a lot easier to get really, really good jazz vinyl in these parts. (One of my recent purchases,. Which was $3 at Wax 'n Facts.). Much has been written about Terry Teachout's now infamous column Can Jazz Be Saved?

Atlanta Jazz Guitar
Dave Lockwood is all these things and more. David's playing has been an integral part of the warm ambience enjoyed by my customers when they join me at my bar to relax - his skillful playing of classic, standard material weaves well with the other more esoteric material he culls from, and molds itself to any occasion. I look forward to my smooth, jazz-filled evenings, and my clientele lets me know they dig him, too! Michael Ash-Sharbaugh, Sage on Sycamore, Decatur. All content 2010 David Lockwood.
