Thursday, November 12, 2015. The Way A Puppy Grows. Maybe you don't have a mother and aunts who love to sing like mine, but I have this one stuck in my head from my aunt singing it to our son the other day:. Oh, I think it's rather silly,. The way a puppy grows. A little on his waggly tail. A little on his nose. A little on his tummy. A little on his ears. I guess he'll be a dog alright. In half a dozen years". Neonatal Period: Days 1-12. If puppies are handled and exposed to mild environmental stressors...

SmartPups: Guest Post: Queen Roxie, the Spoiled Pittie Pup
http://smartpupsdogtraining.blogspot.com/2015/03/guest-post-queen-roxie-spoiled-pittie.html
Sunday, March 1, 2015. Guest Post: Queen Roxie, the Spoiled Pittie Pup. I'm telling you this because I am worried about my people. I think they have something called Obsessive-Compulsive behaviors with me. Like they think I can't eat without sitting and waiting first? Believe me, I can. I mean I eat a little more slowly when they make me sit first, but what does that matter? Labels: cold weather training. Dog training salibury MD. March 16, 2015 at 2:54 PM. So far Cheesecake hasnt picked up that nonsense!

SmartPups: Calm Submissive State, My A%#.

Monday, August 25, 2014. Calm Submissive State, My A%#. My blood pressure has been rising almost exponentially lately whenever I hear about other trainers who look down on or dismiss the effectiveness of reward based training. These trainers are always spouting someone else's mantra about your dog needing to be in a "calm, submissive state". They are even right here- gasp. Think about it in human terms, if it helps. If you are relaxed, laying on the couch reading a book, that's a "calm state" right?

Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Conditioning: The Nitty Gritty of Clean Training, Part 1. Did you know that proper conditioning is important for your dog? In training, we use both Operant and Classical Conditioning and I am using this post to tell you all about Operant Conditioning and hopefully not bore you too much. I'll go into Classical Conditioning in the next couple weeks, but for simplicity sake we will say for now that it's the part of training is learning by association. Punishers- generally speaking, th...

SmartPups: Setting Up For Success and Other Reasons Your Dog Trainer Sounds Crazy
http://smartpupsdogtraining.blogspot.com/2016/05/setting-up-for-success-and-other.html
Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Setting Up For Success and Other Reasons Your Dog Trainer Sounds Crazy. One (yes, there are more than one) of the things I say to clients that gets eye rolls/giggles/crazy looks is when I tell them about setting their dog up for success. It's not because the idea of setting up your dog for success is a crazy idea, but more the way I say it. Usually it's something like this:. Me: "Since he's good and tired from that walk, let's go ahead and work on the 'stay' cue.". I think that anyo...

Monday, March 16, 2015. I am so happy when my clients see an improvement in their dog's behavior. I am absolutely thrilled. If they brag about their dog and mention me! This week's post is by a client of mine and one of the sweetest puppies I know, Cheesecake. I'm happy to say that she's well on her way to being that ambassador after just a few weeks of training- I can't wait to see what else this pup will do to amaze us! What skill(s) has your dog picked up that helped you to live well with them? Amanda...

SmartPups: I Like My Expectations Low
http://smartpupsdogtraining.blogspot.com/2014/12/i-like-my-expectations-low.html
Sunday, December 28, 2014. I Like My Expectations Low. Not to be mean to all the wonderful pet parents out there, but those kinds of expectations are crazy. Would you expect a child to be just as calm at Disney World as they are in their own backyard? Of course not, it's a different place! 1 Dogs are not good a Generalizing. 2 You need to be Patient and Fair. With it at home. This does not mean your dog will be just as fantastic when you try this outside at the park or during a walk. This is wher...Anoth...

SmartPups: Stop the Flooding!
http://smartpupsdogtraining.blogspot.com/2016/10/stop-flooding.html
Wednesday, October 19, 2016. My husband is attempting to habituate. Me to spiders- to get me used to them by exposure over time. His idea is that the more I see spiders, the less scary they will be. This could work, if he was using the correct method of habituation. With putting spiders close to me (or pretending to do so), he is using a technique called flooding-. Repeated exposure to a high intensity stimulus without any means of the subject escaping or changing the situation. I'm SO glad you asked!

SmartPups: The Nitty Gritty of Clean Training, Part 2: Reinforcement Schedules

Sunday, July 10, 2016. The Nitty Gritty of Clean Training, Part 2: Reinforcement Schedules. As someone who uses reward based training, I hear this one all the time: "but if I train with treats, my dog will only ever listen when I have treats! That could be true- if you never change your reinforcement schedule and never fade out food treats. If you work with a trainer who understands reinforcement schedules and how to use them to fade out food treats and fine tune behavior, this is never a problem. Which ...
