Our familys journey Homesteading our backyard. Waste Not…Want Not….I hope. My goats waste soooo much hay. I have been looking around for hayracks to put in their stalls to not only keep the hay off the ground, but dry as well. What I have found are very expensive (I’m trying to save money here! And quite large. I got inventive. These are actually Hanging Baskets for flowers. They work! For now) And they were only $4.99. I forgot to take a before picture, so here is a similar one. Tropical Homestead: Harvesting Pigeon Peas
http://tropicalhomestead.blogspot.com/2013/10/harvesting-pigeon-peas.html
A nascent tropical homesteader learning to build, make, and grow on her own bit of jungle on Hawai'i Island. Monday, October 14, 2013. A beautiful day for harvesting pigeon peas. Our plants had two harvests this year, on in May and one in October. It takes a while to pick and shuck the peas, but it is easy, pleasant work with great reward. Pigeon peas on the plant. Quinoa salad with pigeon peas. The internet is full of great pigeon pea resources and recipes. Here are a few of my faves:. I'm a scientist-t...

Tropical Homestead: About Me
http://tropicalhomestead.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html
A nascent tropical homesteader learning to build, make, and grow on her own bit of jungle on Hawai'i Island. I'm in no way an expert. I'm a newbie tropical homesteader. My partner and I moved to a rural part of Hawai'i in October 2010 from San Francisco. We were seeking a slower and more sustainable life. I was also looking forward to learning about gardening and plants, and there certainly has been a lot of that! In this blog I record what interests me, and I hope that others approaching a similar trans...

Tropical Homestead: Mamee Apple Chutney
http://tropicalhomestead.blogspot.com/2014/09/mamee-apple-chutney.html
A nascent tropical homesteader learning to build, make, and grow on her own bit of jungle on Hawai'i Island. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. I'm so enamored with mammee apples. They aren't found commonly here, but I sometimes find them at Maku'u farmer's market from vendors/growers who embrace exotic fruits. Firm and tangy, they ease my craving for a summer nectarine or apricot. Mammee apple - yum! I made some chutney with ingredients on-hand, trying to keep it mostly-local. 3 cups chopped ripe mammee apple.

Kewmarnic Cottage: May 2016

The butterfly counts not months but moments and has time enough" - Rabindranath Tagore. Sunday, 29 May 2016. I've never stored Golden Delicious apples long term before even though the old tree has been here for years. We've tended to either eat them quite quickly or stew and freeze them. Golden Delicious apples stewed with a little sugar and cinnamon are heavenly! Keep them long enough and they really are. Gloriously gold and delicious! Saturday, 28 May 2016. Thursday, 26 May 2016. In the cold of winter ...

The butterfly counts not months but moments and has time enough" - Rabindranath Tagore. Monday, 3 October 2016. The Joys Of Spring. It is the first week of October and Spring is - as the old joke goes - really springing. The cherry blossoms which line the streets of Southbridge are bursting forth in all their glory. The butterfly counts not months but moments and has time enough" - Rabindranath Tagore. Monday, 21 December 2015. I sense a gooseberry pie in our future! These little green beauties are doing very well in their second year. They are sweeter than the gooseberries we used to grow but with the same wonderful tartiness. Perfect to put into a pie and serve with lashings of fresh cream. Below : The gooseberry bushes grow alongside some of the grapevines. Thursday, 17 December 2015. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
