at the bench: October 2013
http://atthebench-conservation.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Notes from a university library conservator. Wednesday, October 30, 2013. I was going through our stacks the other day comparing two copies of the same book, in order to make sure that the book in the best condition was used in a class. Our library books are arranged in Library of Congress call number order for the most part, but we do have some books grouped as collections according to the requests of the original donor. There are no records of this particular Bible prior to its acquisition by the UVa L...

Notes from a university library conservator. Monday, March 25, 2013. Really, Mr. Framer, do you think you used enough glue? Monday, March 11, 2013. Cradles for Miniature Books. I gave a training session to a colleague last week, she needed to know how to display a group of miniature books safely and so I showed her a very simple, cost-effective method for making custom cradles out of 20 pt. board. Should I make every custom cradle and install every item to ensure that nothing happens to our books? Miniat...

Notes from a university library conservator. Thursday, February 21, 2013. Increase Mather has remarkably neat handwriting. From his manuscript "Concerning Apparitions". Click to see the manuscript on my flickr account. His father, Richard Mather, not so much. Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Don't Let the Pigeon Play with Tape. This is just the sort of news that makes archivists and conservators anxious, because where there are window mats and framed documents, there is often tape. (Insert dramatic, horro...

Notes from a university library conservator. Wednesday, July 10, 2013. Today at the office! Tuesday, July 2, 2013. I had always considered them an artifact of the 20th century and family vacations, so I was delighted to see this item in my queue for exhibit review: Survey of the Roads of the United States of America by Christopher Colles. This close up shows the road to Poughkeepsie, NY and includes some details, such as Wappingers Creek, that are still there today. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Job Openin...

Occasional thoughts on the conservation of cultural heritage. New washi tape for all of your…conservation decorating needs? July 19, 2011. Who hasn’t dreamed of rolls of remoistenable washi in a variety of colors and sizes for use in routine treatments? Well, you’re not going to find it at Sinco-MT. But you will find rolls of decorative wall tape. Well, it looks like contact paper, but I can’t quite sort out the Japanese. I very much doubt that this is handmade Japanese paper. blurtomato's world
Sunday, August 16, 2015. It has almost been a year since the last update! Oh the guilt of saying I'm busy. Much has been going on! I took a 3 week break from work, and did a Tokyo - Hokkaido - YF camp itinerary. Tokyo with JLS was an anticipated trip because we have been saying for the longest time ever that we wanted a trip together. Highlights included visiting Mt. Fuji at a distance, Disneyland, and the many shopping districts. It was like a pact. Heh. YF camp was held at Tangkak this year! LA was fun...

Notes from a university library conservator. Friday, December 2, 2016. When Was the Last Time You Folded a Map? Our graduate intern, Emilie Duncan, has taken on the task of wrangling a "map stash" in our Special Collections Library. The stash had accumulated over the years, and consisted of many, many maps and broadsides that were too fragile or damaged to be sent to the flat file drawers with the rest of the collection. Best practice is to start in the middle where the creases are often most stubborn an...

Nov 28, 2012. I spent Friday by myself relishing the fortune and bliss that is owning my house and fleece pajamas. Note that I am wearing pink to match Her Highness. On Saturday, I wrapped myself around a certain puggle and soaked up enough fur therapy to last me until I see my best bud, Souper, next month. And so it goes. And so it goes. Posted by Joie de Vivre. Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Nov 26, 2012. And even the dreaded yard work. Please pray for me. Posted by Joie de Vivre. Nov 12, 2012. You know...
