Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Well, looks like it's going to rain all day, so I'll do a post. We rented a car over the weekend and took Masami's mom to Kakeroma (see 2009's post. Where we go every year to visit her uncle and aunt (see also 2008's post). A nice arch at Honohoshi. We did the usual stuff, a barbecue, fireworks, snorkeling, and driving. Sunday, July 4, 2010. We thought about staying here, but didn't think we'd get much sleep. Ishigaki is kind of like Masami's home island of Amami-Oshima, except with a Club Med. Mudskippers, fish out of water. I know how they must feel. Nice mangrove swamps all over the island. We also have these on Amami. I waded through the mud here in the late afternoon light. Some good snorkeling at Yonehara beach. It was incredibly hot, even the water was like a bathtub. Cute little Nemo fish. Cool as a sea cucumber.

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Amami Oshima is all mountains. With 120 inches of rain a year, that means waterfalls! There must be waterfalls everywhere, but finding them is the hard part. There are a couple on the tourist maps, and I've found a couple on my own. A foreign guy who lives here has a blog and he gave me directions to some pretty spectacular waterfalls that I wouldn't have found otherwise. This is a nice one, Funangyo Falls. A huge waterfall. Same as the one at the top. One of the bigger cascades.

Thursday, July 8, 2010. Iriomote: A Walk on the Wild Side of Japan. Iriomote is Japan's wildest island (which isn't saying much). A paved road only goes half way around the island, and there are supposedly no roads into the interior. We rented a car from the owner for cheap. Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Brown Boobies and Flying Fish. The fresh air made me feel a lot better, and I had a great time watching the brown boobies flying around the boat. I saw these other little birds glide just above the surface of the water and then dive beneath the waves. It took me a minute to realize they were flying fish! It was very cool watching the boobies hunt the fish, skimming the surface after them and darting beneath the water, leaving white tunnels in their paths. Cape Takana is a rough j...
