Australian Wine Companion: A tribute to Phillip John

http://australianwinecompanion.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-tribute-to-phillip-john.html

Friday, February 6, 2015. A tribute to Phillip John. The news of Phillip John’s death saddened me greatly. He and I were involved in wine show judging over several decades and numerous intersections with winemaking/consulting over a period of four years at Lindemans. A handsome testimonial was released on behalf of James Kirby of Hungerford Hill Wines, and that follows. - JH. One of the greats in the Australian wine fraternity passed away this week. Australian Wine Companion: January 2015

http://australianwinecompanion.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 8, 2015. International Wine Challenge Results. The press release which follows is interesting. It’s clear that Helen Kenny wasn’t around in the early 1990s. Australia went through a golden period at that time, winning more medals (including gold) than France, with less than half the number of entries. The success strike rate of Australia and France isn’t specified, and I’m trying to chase that up. - JH. Australia closes gap on France, picking up equal number of Gold medals. De Bortoli W...

Friday, December 12, 2014. Garry Crittenden, patriarch of Crittenden Estate, and an early mover in innovative marketing and energetic sales efforts in the UK in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, is looking on with approval at son Rollo and daughter Zoe as they release details of the new Crittenden Wine Centre. - JH. The press release explains the concept thus:. Upon arrival, visitors will be welcomed and given an introduction to Crittenden Estate before being offered a place to sit and asked which varietals...

Australian Wine Companion: March 2014

http://australianwinecompanion.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 13, 2014. I don’t know when I’m going to have time to get back into my cellar to continue some long over-due organisation and tidying up, but at least my new supply of cellar tags has arrived. If you don’t know about these, and have single bottle storage, they are very useful www.cellartags.com.au. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Follow this blog by email. View my complete profile. Friday, April 12, 2013. Wow - there is an article today. By James Halliday about a wine auction to be held in order to raise funds for the Len Evans Foundation. If i had the money I'd go and bid as there some fantastic wines on offer, as well as an amazing dinner featuring a series of Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache, all donated by the redoubtable Mr Halliday. He's a great raconteur and that would be some evening. Droool! Friday, April 12, 2013. Links to this post.

I was recently sent 11 wines from the Rias Baixas region of Spain by the Spanish economic and Commercial Office to review but im not sure that my opinions will be welcome. All the wines are commercially available in the Irish market and they retail from €15.50 to €29.00. Overall, I had expected that these would be lovely, especially in this current heat wave but sadly this was not the case. Monday, July 08, 2013. Links to this post.

Dermot's wine blog: Fit for purpose...

http://dermotswineblog.blogspot.com/2014/08/fit-for-purpose.html

View my complete profile. Friday, August 1, 2014. Are Harpers wine blogs fit for purpose? No Not a bit, judging by a recent example, namely one entitled “Is the Institute of Masters of Wine fit for purpose? By Mr Stephen Forward. The main reason for my negative response is that he states the Institute (IMW) is an elitist club, accessible only by invitation and is not fit for purpose. He further states that IMW is not relevant to the modern wine industry. He then trots out the old chestnut of a 10% pass r...

http://dermotswineblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

View my complete profile. Saturday, June 27, 2015. The June 2015 issue of Shelflife has an article. Which claims that Irish wine consumers pay 624% more excise than their fellow Europeans. Now claims like this are always sensational, especially when used to back up a case - assuming, of course, that the figure is correct. Which it is, isnt it? Saturday, June 27, 2015. Who ever heard of. Early Saturday morning, drag yourself out of bed, put on suit (battledress all day as no time to change before tonight’s dinner), struggle to café for breakfast, feel refreshed (just), move on, find seat and ask yourself if you want to sleep or do a tasting of 46 wines? Australian Wine Collectables - History of Australian wine through objects

November 1, 2014. With the release last month of Penfolds range of premium wines it seems like a good time to have a look at some of the earlier bottles available from this company. I won’t delve into the history of Penfolds as there are plenty of resources online already dealing with the subject, e.g. here is the Wikipedia entry. Most collectable Penfolds bottles date to the 1910s-1920s (except of course that many Penfolds wines such as Grange are themselves collectables! August 7, 2014. Blaxland Silver...

Tuesday, December 8, 2015. But it’s the comment regarding grapes that really caught my attention, namely that reduced yields and earlier ripening of grape crops are already evident. So far as earlier ripening is concerned, it’s true of some regions, but not others, and it is absolutely untrue that there have been Australia-wide reduction in crop levels over the past five years.
