Thaddeus the Sixth: January 2015

Friday, 30 January 2015. Review: Caesar’s War Commentaries, by Julius Caesar. It should be stressed that there’s an emphasis on military matters, both strategic and tactical, and that the political situation, excepting The Civil War (which is perhaps a fifth or less of the book), are in the background. Wednesday, 21 January 2015. Review: The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation, by Ian Mortimer. And was looking forward forward to it. I had the vague notion that Edward II had...

Thaddeus the Sixth: Books

The trade festival of Mascezad is normally a time of plenty for Horst and his trader uncle, but when they visit Highford Horst finds himself conscripted by the city’s mages. Unable to return to his own people and abandoned by his uncle, his fortunes go from bad to worse when he discovers that the city is being terrorised by a spate of murders, and the killer has a particular taste for dead mages…. The Kingdom of Denland. Denland suffered greatly in the last war, fought 10 years ago against Felaria. Already on the back foot, the Kuhrisch then ambushed the King and the heir to the throne, killing both and leaving the kingdom in a perilous position. In return for surrendering the city of Highford, the Felarians agreed to make peace with Denland and to fight against the Kuhrisch. The Kingdom of Felaria. The) Kuhrland refers to both the lion’s share of the country and the country itself. Unli...A north...

Thaddeus the Sixth: December 2014
http://thaddeusthesixth.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Monday, 22 December 2014. Review: Emperor of Thorns, by Mark Lawrence. Emperor of Thorns is the last instalment in The Broken Empire Trilogy. Here are my reviews of Prince of Thorns. And King of Thorns. The writing style, as has been the case with both prior books, is very easy to read. We continue to see the development of Jorg’s character, as well as the likes of Makin and Miana. Emperor of Thorns is a good final part of a cracking trilogy, set in an intriguing world that mixes elements of both the pas...

Thaddeus the Sixth: May 2015

Sunday, 24 May 2015. The Witcher 3 (PS4) – early thoughts. The Witcher 3’s reputedly a massive game (200 hours is the figure given for a pretty comprehensive playthrough), so it’ll be a while before I review it properly. In the meantime, here are my initial impressions. Once you get past that and can save, the problem does not recur (or hasn’t for me, at any rate). Gwent, the card game, is lots of fun and very easy to understand. Downsides, initial load screen aside? I don’t have enough time to pla...

Thaddeus the Sixth: March 2015
http://thaddeusthesixth.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 March 2015. Review: A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain, by Marc Morris. Edward I’s biography is a very enjoyable book. I know only a little about this period, but never felt lost. The maps (of England, Wales, Gascony and Scotland) proved useful and, unlike some maps, didn’t have details swallowed by the spine or obscured by having too much crammed into too small a space. Most of the book takes place during the 13. As is common with this sort of book, there are tw...

Thaddeus the Sixth: The Decline and Rise of Mankind
http://thaddeusthesixth.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-decline-and-rise-of-mankind.html
Monday, 27 July 2015. The Decline and Rise of Mankind. There are two competing approaches to the state of mankind in Greek mythology. Basically, things are either gradually degrading and getting worse, or civilisation is improving the world. The idea of industry as a bad thing is no stranger in fantasy either. The iconic images of Saruman having the trees torn down are pretty unambiguous, as is his treatment of the Shire (at the end of the book, the films take another path). On the other hand, Red Countr...

Wednesday, 18 February 2015. An Interview with Andrew P. Weston, author of The IX. I’m pleased to say that Andrew P. Weston, author of the sci-fi (meets historical fiction) novel The IX has come in for an interview. You’ve written a new novel called The IX. What’s the premise of the story? The premise is that death might only be the beginning of the adventure. It’s summed up quite nicely in the introductory blurb:. Roman legionnaires, far from home, lost in the mists of Caledonia. Not really. The Nin...
