littleorangeguy: The Life Of A Tree
http://littleorangeguy.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-life-of-tree.html
What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, March 23, 2014. The Life Of A Tree. In 2002, Kelly and I bought an old house in Toronto's east end. A 72 year old house, in fact, and along with it came a 72 year old silver maple, which dominated our backyard. About the worst I could say about the tree is that, between its shade and the large numbers of squirrels who lived in its 100 foot branches, it wasn't that good for our tomato crop. Hermit Thrush , House Finc...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Saturday, January 25, 2014. The Stones Shout Out. If, like me, you think that history is a back-and-forth between what happened in the past and how we understand it, then the National Mall in Washington DC is a wonderful place to explore. The Lincoln Memorial, finally dedicated in 1922 after some 60 years of debate and false starts on how to memorialize the 16th President, dominates the landscape. Continue along the tidal b...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Monday, May 19, 2014. Birding Madness, v. 2014. Saturday, May 17, 8:20 am - the start of our very successful 2014 Baillie Birdathon. Despite the temperature (5 degrees C - Atomic Fireball weather) we decided to spend a couple of hours at Tommy Thompson Park on the Leslie Spit and then come back home to see what we'd get in our back yard. "A couple of hours" turned into the best part of a day. Tree growing around concrete.

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, June 17, 2012. The Killdeer and the Mockingbird. Two years ago, birds were not on my radar. I recognized the basics: gulls, pigeons, crows, cardinals, blue jays, and robins. Then there were all those brown birds and some black birds and the occasional colourful bird Sara would point out to me that would register for about two seconds. I didn't really think too much about them or what they were doing. Where it flies ...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, October 13, 2013. Family History, Poetic Justice. Carl Sandburg Home, Flat Rock, NC. Carl Sandburg is actually the first poet I remember learning about in school. The first poem? Appropriate for a Newfoundlander, I guess. On little cat feet. Over harbor and city. And then moves on. That, we were told, was metaphor! I never knew any more beautiful than you:. I have hunted you under my thoughts,. Lincoln. That's w...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, July 15, 2012. Bring out your dead! Quiet residential street in July. It is mid-morning and the temperature is already in the mid-30s (that's mid-90s in U.S.). Someone has placed a dead raccoon at the side of the street; it has been there since the previous afternoon. I will go and do it with you but I don’t want to do it alone. The dead raccoon is still up the road. I guess I will call the city. You just have to br...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, May 12, 2013. A Pledge Too Far? The birding world is full of wonderful ideas. One of them is Pledge to Fledge. An international effort in late April each year in which those of us who love birds are entreated to bring "friends and other non-birders out to truly see and enjoy birds for the first time. In case you weren't clear, the bold italics are a sign that what we are engaging in here is bird evangelism. It's nam...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Monday, December 17, 2012. History and Real Life. Passed in 1791, the second amendment says:. Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville. 2007. Case in point: My friend Jeff, who lives in Colorado, relates this story of his Sunday afternoon trip to the mall:. In the parking lot, a young father was cajoling his very young and somewhat recalcitrant son into their car. Prominently displayed on the man's hip was a handgun, in a ...

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, April 7, 2013. And So It Begins . We've seen (and heard) the signs these past few weeks. But today, the appearance of a pair of golden-crowned kinglets made it official: the birds are on their way back. I've been getting used to our new camera, a Leica V-Lux 4. He cooperated long enough for this:. And then the Leica cooperated well enough to capture him taking off. First he de-iced the wings:. The robins are playing...
