We sail through police check points, don’t garner sideways glances in affluent neighborhoods, and are generally understood to be predispositioned for success based on a physical characteristic (the color of our skin) we have little control over beyond sunscreen and tanning oil. A space where I could swim for hours in a beautiful ocean in a one piece swim suit or lie on the beach, reading a book in a swim suit, without attracting leers from local men and disapproving stares from women. I wanted to enjoy the simple uncomplicated pleasures of reading and swimming in peace, and break free from the unwritten societal codes which dictate what good Sri Lankan girls can and cannot do.
