One Gear Ray: Pulverization Complete
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2013/11/pulverization-complete.html
Sunday, November 3, 2013. Sometime back in summer, I mentioned to John and Jeff that we needed a replacement for the AES BCT race. John had done some riding out at Picket Post exploring the AZT north of the highway, so I had mentioned that maybe we could cook up a couple loops, short and long to incorporate some of that trail as well as the great stuff south of Picket Post. So, thankfully, WE HAD A RACE; the Picket Post Punisher! There, with few words said, we began the grind north up Montana Mountain.

One Gear Ray: October 2012
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 9, 2012. On Monday 10/8/2012, a bit prior to 2pm, I wrapped up my run of the Coconino 250. Stage race as I rolled onto the pavement at Quintana Drive in Flagstaff. No cheering crowds, no podium girls to kiss on each cheek(lol)…nuthin…except the breeze blowing and the sun shining; just the way I like it. This was a special race for me since it was my first completed multi-day race. After being taken out on day 2 of the 2012 AZT (link). OK, on with the story…. Shortly after leaving FR240, ...

One Gear Ray: April 2013
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 21, 2013. My 2013 AZT300: Attempt #2 = DNF. Sitting here some 19 hours after pulling the plug, I’m still playing the events over and over in my mind that led me to ending my AZT300. Unlike last year, where other peoples carelessness took me out, this year it was me. It is those uncontrollable factors and how you manage them ends up being the the difference between finishing a monster like the AZT300, and throwing in the towel. My race basically went like this…. The trail there is brutal - l...

One Gear Ray: Bye Bye Monkey...
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2015/04/bye-bye-monkey.html
Tuesday, April 7, 2015. With the “Monkey”. This year, anger meter pegged.but still had doubts! None-the-less, I was still “In” more than “Out” so I proceed to get stuff ready and prepare my “date” for a 4 day journey. Due to prior experiences, I carried WAY too much tire fix-it stuff(3 tubes, CO2, patches, glue, needle, thread, etc) but figured “better safe than sorry”…. The SS Carbon Niner, with a 34T oval and 22t cog, ready to go. Ready to rock and roll! Pic from John S). At about 7:30PM, my neck was s...

One Gear Ray: June 2013
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 23, 2013. Mark: Hey man, you wanna carpool over to Santa Fe and ride in the New Mexico Endurance Series Big Friggen Loop Race? I DNF’d last year and need redemption. Ray: Uh, maybe… How does it compare to the Gila100 in terms of suffering? Mark: It’s no Gila100. Ray: OK, I’m in. Now, silly me, I was figuring he meant the SFBFL race was gonna be “easier” than the Gila100. I could never have been so wrong. Heck, I even threw on a 22t cog with a 32t chainring…that oughta be plenty, right? This ...

One Gear Ray: February 2013
http://onegear-ray.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 3, 2013. Take 93 miles of rubly, sketchy AZT singletrack and decide to make a point to point race on it. Call it the Gila100 and put the invite out to as many mentally unbalanced endurance junkies you know. Then scare people with estimated finish times of 20 hours. Yes, that was Chad Browns wonderful idea and holy sh*t…was that a tough race. Easily the hardest day I’ve ever spent on a bike. The fun started at the Picket Post trailhead yesterday morning at 5AM. You get this cool view of t...
