10 years of fight against AIDS. In Uganda, every year, 90 thousand HIV positive women get pregnant. Without any intervention, 24 thousand children risk to born with HIV/AIDS. 10 years of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). 10 years of fight against AIDS in Uganda. On the occasion of this anniversary, AVSI. Presents the results achieved in the implementation of the PMTCT program, which enables HIV-positive mothers to give birth to children free from HIV. AVSI started supporting PMTCT activities in 2002, in two hospitals in northern Uganda. In ten years, AVSI have supported 4 hospitals and 37 health centers. The whole health care system has improved.

PMTCT (Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS) is a method to reduce the risk of infection. Of an infant of a mother who is HIV infected. HIV is transmitted from a mother to an infant before, during, and after labour. MTCT of HIV can be prevented. By behavioural education on sexual behaviour and risk reduction, provision of prophylaxis and antiretroviral therapy, obstetric interventions, and changes in breastfeeding practices.
