Thursday, September 2, 2010. Writing is a little like gardening. The thing to do is start. Get out and dig. Most of the time I put it off. The start is usually where I don't know what to do or where to go and I'm stiff in the bones and my heart is dull, but, there's the element of curiosity, wondering where it will go, where it will take you. A Wandering vein: November 2009

http://www.awanderingvein.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 10, 2009. The last of the Savoys. It's mid November and this one's still in the ground. He was raised humanly. No hormones or stimulants. A most hardy chap. Italian variety. Who would of thought? This one just made it through a mighty mid fall snow storm. He lay there buried night and day in what appeared to be a foot of snow. He's sat through three frosts. He's fed aphids, given comfort to lady bugs and allowed worms to ramble around below. A generous spirit indeed. We would dress like...

A Wandering vein: July 2009

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Posted by A wandering vein. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Another perhaps closer to the bone, but more honest way to eat your meat is to catch it and kill it yourself. As humans we have always taken life to maintain life be it animal or vegetable. We decide which animals and plants are pests and then dutifully destroy them by poison or by traps. We decide which ones to keep and cuddle as family and which ones to have for supper. I am reminded of an obscure poem that I recently wrote:.

A Wandering vein: December 2009

http://www.awanderingvein.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 3, 2009. We reposed to our garden seats and enjoyed leftover boozy prune tart with coffee and a lather of cream and were nourished by a giving autumnal sun. Posted by A wandering vein. Wednesday, December 2, 2009. It's my birthday and I'll drink if I want to. When your birthday comes around, friends think about what you really love in life, and then proceed to find gifts that reflect your passions and interests. Tucked between the elegant Burgundian and the brash American lies the Ital...

Monday, June 29, 2009. A patriotic put in. The author and his wife went on a little river trip on the Colorado river last week-end. The photo reveals the US flag's salient dominance over the Indian canoe. A gentle reminder lest we forget where or who we are. Posted by A wandering vein. We also carry a "groover" or portable toilet but I neglected to take its picture. It's just a small black box to hold waste. Picture coming later. Posted by A wandering vein. Fred Can Do It: April 2015

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. What's wrong with this picture? To answer that question, I need to transport myself back to Sister Agatha's grade-school classroom. We had just been handed an unusual test, several pages of questions stapled together, probably 100 questions in all, and nothing to do with our class. At the top of the first page, in big letters, it said:. REVIEW ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING! Of the pallet) have a hole on that end. The...

Fred Can Do It: January 2015

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Sunday, January 4, 2015. Self-confidence is an adolescent, drunken friend tempting you to do things you should not do. It is a bad boy with no common sense and no grip on reality and especially no concept of what it means to grow older. It convinced me that I could lift the 12-foot beams onto the posts by myself without pushing the posts off center. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Attempting to do it myself. Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Not Going Back Up There. Corky told a joke yesterday. I guess it was funny- who knows? He told it to Jam, not to me. I'm pretty sure that Corky's joke was about me, probably something about my fear of heights, just because I built that scaffolding instead of using a ladder like a normal person. Whatever Corky said, Jam had a good laugh. I deserved it. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Attempting to do it myself.

Fred Can Do It: Mission Tile, Tapered vs Straight

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2015/04/mission-tile-tapered-vs-straight.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Monday, April 13, 2015. Mission Tile, Tapered vs Straight. Just for fun I sometimes carry on an internal dialog in which I explain, to myself, how something does or should work. I then challenge myself, call myself a naïve, simplistic fool and then demand a better explanation, which I calmly provide to myself in a condescending tone, on and on, back and forth until I can understand a thing or at least pretend that I do. I've attempted to hash thi...

Fred Can Do It: June 2014

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Sunday, June 8, 2014. I finished the last bit of grouting early this morning, working on the part of the walkway that is not shaded by our big oak trees. Grouting a stone pathway is the most peaceful sort of work. Cement and sand is mixed together with just a little water and the clock starts ticking. My red bucket holds enough for about 30 minutes of work. The commitment of focus. Sorry, I can't." My bucket isn't empty yet. For years this part o...

Fred Can Do It: February 2015

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Sunday, February 22, 2015. After many months of planning and research, of scouring the web for pictures of Asian architecture, of searching through websites and blogs for ideas, of hacking into some online sites that sell drawings and stealing their ideas (though I never actually used them, so I guess it's OK). Though it is not a pagoda at all. Links to this post. Monday, February 16, 2015. Touching the Sky with Rafters. I invited Cheryl out to t...

Fred Can Do It: Up on the Rooftop

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2015/03/up-on-rooftop.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Sunday, March 8, 2015. Up on the Rooftop. I've been dreading the day when I would need to climb up on top of the pagoda's roof. I tried to do it last week but chickened out. Stepping from the ladder onto the roof seemed like an impossible challenge. And then how would I ever get back on the ladder? Yesterday I built some scaffolding just so I wouldn't have to step off from a flat surface. That's how scared I am. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Fred Can Do It: October 2014

http://fredcandoit.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Fred Can Do It. Doing things better done by professionals. Monday, October 27, 2014. Filling the Tiny Cracks. My allergies continue to fill my head with so much fluid that I can barely think. One good thing about keeping a blog is that I can go back and check my memory, specifically to find out when my allergies were ever this bad. Was it in October? Yes, turns out it was in October 2011. So maybe it's something in the October air. If I were floating. In the mortar (using very dry mortar and pressing it ...

A WANDERING TRAVELER

Gentle Musings and Wild Rantings. Wandering the local farmers market here in Jacksonville, arm in arm with my first-born, was a restorative experience for my soul. In our daily lives of processed this and pre-made that, the elemental smells and beautiful colors of row upon row of freshness has a way of reminding me of the necessity of simplicity of life. Standing amidst the scent of produce and the hustle and bustle of commerce makes me pensive and introspective. I am hoping this year will be one in whic...

Looking for a place where its wine and me belong together.
