Advancing the Pokemon | A Year of Coding
https://ayearofcoding.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/advancing-the-pokemon
A Year of Coding. 365 Days of Immersion in Code. I’m not unstuck yet, but I am advancing a bit. I just finished playing with the code a bit trying to tackle one small problem at a time rather than trying to solve the whole thing all at once. This strategy has proven more and more successful as the program has grown. The next steps are to pop dead pokemon out of the player / computer’s hand and then advance the remaining pokemon to the fore. Here’s a copy of the text from the latest run:. IDNumber = 3, na...
Stuck in the mud | A Year of Coding

A Year of Coding. 365 Days of Immersion in Code. Stuck in the mud. It’s not that I haven’t been trying to move forward with this program (the Pokemon thing), the problem is that I’ve gotten stuck in the mud. I don’t think the problem is really so huge, but that I’m having trouble figuring out what the problem actually is. There’s just not sufficient direction in my debugger to point me to the problem. Xcode 6 and SWIFT. The Turing test doesn’t matter. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.
Halt and Catch Fire | A Year of Coding
https://ayearofcoding.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/halt-and-catch-fire
A Year of Coding. 365 Days of Immersion in Code. Halt and Catch Fire. 100 Films in 100 Days. Boy, I really do look like Mary Stuart Masterson. Something more than a tense relationship between a meterosexual narcissist with vision, a brooding middle aged hardware designer with struggling between his need for self-fulfillment and familial responsibilities, and a young genius who is obviously the love child of Meg Ryan and Mary Stuart Masterson? I couldn’t help but be drawn in right away by Joe’s Porsche 944.
Baby steps- catching dreams | A Year of Coding

A Year of Coding. 365 Days of Immersion in Code. Baby steps- catching dreams. We should be working. I’ve been trying to get more sleep lately. This means that a significant portion of my ‘coding time’ has now been exchanged for ‘sleeping time.’ That, in turn, means much less progress with my latest coding project, the Pokemon Card Game. I’m not sure this thing will work. 3 Trying to keep my code simple and organized. Let’s be honest, #3 has been right out the window. Halt and Catch Fire. Jul 29, 2014.
The Turing test doesn’t matter | A Year of Coding
https://ayearofcoding.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/the-turing-test-doesnt-matter
A Year of Coding. 365 Days of Immersion in Code. The Turing test doesn’t matter. An excellent exploration of the Turing test, AI, and the ability of the former to assess the later. I especially agree with Mr. Pigliucci’s argument that we really don’t even know what we are looking for with this test. We’re apparently asking whether some ‘being’ is close enough to us in its way of thinking and expressing itself that we are fooled into assuming that it is human. A great question and a great article. A compu...

a year of classics
A year of classics. Wednesday, June 12, 2013. The last disc I bought was back in November last year - Richard Strauss's, Also Sprach Zarathustra, recorded by the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic with Von Karajan (DG 447 441-2). It's an extraordinary mix of Apollo mission fanfare and grand Wagnerian romanticism. You have to be in the right mood, but if you are, with the volume turned up and the wind howling outside, it's fantastic. Saturday, November 17, 2012. Monday, November 12, 2012. It's tempting to t...

A YEAR OF COMMON CENTS
A YEAR OF COMMON CENTS. 2010 is my year to rise from the debilitation of being flat broke after bankruptcy to teaching myself how to set up a budget, balance a checkbook, save money, invest in myself via a 401(k), and all those other really neat money things that no one ever taught me. A Year of Conscious Living | A Movement Toward Individual and Global Awareness
A Year of Conscious Living. A Movement Toward Individual and Global Awareness. February 16, 2012. Update: We are back in the United States and have been for over two weeks now. I have neglected to write mostly because I have been basking in the familiarity of my family and friends and have needed a few weeks stateside to put some perspective on our very interesting two month journey abroad. And so the travel-weary Team McGuire has returned —-a reiteration of the cyclical patterning of life, we end ...

A Year of Cooking
A Year of Cooking. Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Cream Cheese Coffee Cake. This week's cream cheese coffee cake created a huge mess of my kitchen and pushed the limits of my hand mixer skills, but that tasty swirl of lemon cream cheese floating in rich but airy coffee cake made it all worth it in the end. The cake turned out almost perfect. It looked amazing. It was ever so slightly overcooked. I tried to time giving my daughter a bath and putting her to bed while the cake baked, and it took a w...It was al...
