The philosophy of acupuncture is to consider each person to be unique, and therefore the number of treatments required does depend on the individual and the condition. The effects of acupuncture can be dramatic and immediate, and only one or two treatments may be required. More often a course of five to six is required with an improvement often being felt after the second or third treatment.

Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to these, being extremely fine, and solid rather than hollow. When the needle is inserted the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache.
