Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 37 (India): Kodaikanal
http://robsl15.blogspot.com/2015/02/day-37-india-kodaikanal.html
Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Thursday, 19 February 2015. Day 37 (India): Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal's amiable streets, full of good local restaurants and chocolate shops, rise away from the pretty lake in the centre of town (pic). A stroll round the lake takes a pleasant hour, or less if you're intent on having a deliciously spicy gobi masala. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Find me on Facebook at rob.ainsley. Robʼs South America trip 2014: Day 85: Rio de Janeiro
http://robsa14.blogspot.com/2014/12/day-84-rio-de-janeiro_4.html
Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Thursday, 4 December 2014. Day 85: Rio de Janeiro. Some locals found even more effort-free ways of doing the path than me. Most of the bike path is segregated, but a few joining bits suffer from the same problems as urban cycle lanes everywhere, such as cars parked in them. Or, being Brazil, double-parked (pic). Yesterday with ultra-cheap beer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 21: Jaffna Islands
http://robsl15.blogspot.com/2015/02/day-21-jaffna-islands.html
Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Tuesday, 3 February 2015. Day 21: Jaffna Islands. Linked by causeways (pic) and ferries, a chain of low-lying islands surrounds Jaffna. I spent today exploring some of them by bike – not an entirely easy experience, given the high winds and endlessly dug-up roads. This photo is a rare shot of smooth tarmac. Fishing is the main activity (pic), though everybody was on holiday because of the full moon. Or perhaps, wi...

Robʼs South America trip 2014: September 2014
http://robsa14.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Tuesday, 30 September 2014. Day 20: Mindo: The tarabita. Health and Safety employees had better look away now. Today's excitement was to ride, with some fellow backpackers (hello Susan, Sue, Linda), across a deep ravine in a tarabita. Pic) This is defined on Spanish Wikipedia as un primitivo teleférico utilizado en ciertas regiones de los andes. Primitivo it certainly is, but thrilling.

Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 38 (India): Madurai
http://robsl15.blogspot.com/2015/02/day-38-india-madurai.html
Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Friday, 20 February 2015. Day 38 (India): Madurai. A bus took me – and about 400 others, most crammed standing in the aisle – down off the hills to the big city of Madurai. It's famous for its huge temple complex in the middle of the town, landmarked by four massive towers (pic). The Indian love of multicolours extends to their food. This is the thali. Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 33 (India): Alleppey to Kochi

Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Sunday, 15 February 2015. Day 33 (India): Alleppey to Kochi. A final trip through the backwaters today, this time on a public boat from Alleppey to Kottayam (pic). Actually that's not our boat. Ours was nowhere near as shiny and new. Or level. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Cycling writer. Do more cycling than writing though. Live in York but usually away. Find me on Facebook at rob.ainsley. Day 30 (India): Kollam.

Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015: Day 39 (India): Kanyakumari
http://robsl15.blogspot.com/2015/02/day-39-india-kanyakumari.html
Rob's Sri Lanka trip 2015. Cycling the island's End to End: Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Saturday, 21 February 2015. Day 39 (India): Kanyakumari. Well, given the premise of the Sri Lankan bit of this trip, I could hardly ignore a bus labelled 'End to End' (pic). The six-hour journey took me from Madurai down to Kanyakumari: India's equivalent of Land's End, at the very bottom of the country's triangle. As usual, it took me a while to get to the point, but I got there in the end. Cycling writer. Do mor...

Robʼs South America trip 2014: October 2014

Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Friday, 31 October 2014. Day 51: Titicaca's floating islands. After all the excitement of Machu Picchu, Wednesday (Day 49) was a recovery day eating very nice ceviche. In Cuzco for 7 soles (£1.50) from San Pedro market, and Thursday (Day 50) was spent mostly on a bus through awesome valley scenery to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, 3800m up. They get around between the islands on spl...

Robʼs South America trip 2014: Day 89: Medellín
http://robsa14.blogspot.com/2014/12/day-89-medellin.html
Robʼs South America trip 2014. Dispatches from 11 Sep to 11 Dec 2014, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia etc. Monday, 8 December 2014. Curiously, after yesterday's jokey reference to bike campaigners asking for more generous cyclestreets days, today it seemed that had actually happened. It was a national holiday, meaning the shops were mostly shut, and people were out on bikes taking advantage of yet more closed-off roads (pic). Perhaps I should try joking about winning the lottery.
