It’s been a wet old week in the Backgardenbiome. We escaped the floods which affected much of north west England but we didn’t escape the wind and rain itself. Here is a bedraggled blackbird and a scrawny juvenile Great Tit trying to get some respite and food from the birdtable:. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Create a free...

Here’s one of the small ways I’m trying to help our local wildlife – a nesting house for solitary bees. It’s been up a couple of months now and I’m pleased to say that somebody has moved in. A backyard wildlife project – every day is a wild day! Laquo; Creatures of the night. On July 8, 2012. The new development in the backgardenbiome is the addition of a small pond. It’s a raised pond so no digging was required. I have stocked it with entirely native water and bog plants such as Marsh Marigold, Water Avens, Brooklime and Soft Rush. I’ll be keeping track of what moves into the pond or visits it in the coming weeks. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Bird List for garden.

A blog about gardening. Skip to primary content. June 16, 2012. When adding material of any sort to improve the soil there are a few general things I like to think about. Is there any harmful effects on you, your neighbours, garden wildlife and soil organisms? How much energy does it take to generate, extract, package the fertilizer? What are the effects on the people who produce, dig out etc your fertilizer or live in the area where this is done? Is your fertilizer a renewable or non renewable resource?

Leave things un-picked, so they go over, and you have to pull them up. As with my leeks here. Actually I think we did eat another one or two after this point, but then they put up flower spikes and turned woody. Note to self: bit dim to grow stuff and then leave it in the ground. They got all through that winter, too. A hoverfly, sunbat...

One man's lone struggle against the clouds, cold and insomnia! 8220;If at first you do succeed…”. 8230;what the hell went wrong the second time? These five shots were taken after an hour of carefully aligning the telescope. They were taken with the Canon EOS300D and Nexstar 5SE and the “moon” filter attached, with ISO200 at 0″3 subs. I believe that the poor image quality is due to difficulty in focussing the camera coupled with vibrations from the mirror in the camera flipping. By granthewitt65 . Today ...

Back Garden Chickens
Thursday, October 11, 2012. Sunday, September 16, 2012. It seems that one of our new girls is laying pretty regularly now, though the eggs are quite small. Great to have proper eggs again! Tuesday, September 11, 2012. 3rd night - 3 1/2 out of 4. Two of them seem to like sharing a nest box. I could hear some flapp...
