The Backpacker's Journal

Friday, March 20, 2009. AT - Tumbling Run Shelter. Ben and I relax and enjoy sitting down for a while). Although we got there fairly early (about 6 pm), darkness falls quickly and early on the trail, so we knew we'd better be about the cooking/eating/water purifying tasks or we'd be eating in the dark. Bruce set to work right away, setting up his cook stove and box oven and sending me for water, figuring I couldn't mess that up too bad. Sunday, January 4, 2009. AT - South of Caledonia PA. The Backpacker's Journal: June 2008

http://backpackerjournal.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 16, 2008. On The Trail - AFT. One of my early backpacking trips was to a great trail called the Allegheny Front Trail that runs around the Black Moshannon. State Park near Philipsburg. PA This is almost in the center of PA, near State College and about a 5 hour drive from my home in Westminster. You can read the AFT Website. If you want to know more details about the AFT, the state park or the Alleghaney. So, Bruce and I put this trip together, taking my two sons and a friend of each son&#46...

The Backpacker's Journal: November 2008

Sunday, November 30, 2008. AFT - Monsoon Season. Bruce had set up a little lean-to the night before in anticipation of the rain and that's where we fired up a couple of stoves. We all huddled around the stoves and tried to stand under the lean-to to avoid the rain. Fortunately, everyone (except one; more on him later) had good rain gear, so we weren't getting too wet. My son Ben (left) and Bruce "enjoy" a hot morning drink in the rain. Note Bruce's lean-to in the right shielding several stoves.

Thursday, August 7, 2008. AFT - First Night. But, being the hardy (if green) backpackers, we decided to press on and make the best of it. We had driven about 5 hours to get here, so we were going to get most out of our time we could. Since I'm the greenhorn of the bunch, I was anxious to try my new tent. That I had just purchased from REI. Not knowing much about backpacking I knew I needed a tent, but really knew nothing about selecting one. I bought the tent. For the rest of you novices, the footprint.

Friday, July 1, 2011. Big Tide Brewing, Eh? Have you ever heard of a Beer Trail. I'm not talking about a trail of empty beer cans. I hadn't heard of such a thing either and . I drink a lot of beer! So why not a Beer Trail i...
