Ken began playing guitar in 1963 at the age of 11. It was actually Geoffrey Ware’s older brother’s guitar, but as neither of them could play it Ken got a long term loan. With nobody around to give lessons, Ken stumbled his way around the instrument, copying what he heard on the radio and making some sense of chords through Bert Weedon’s famous ‘Play in a Day’ guitar tutor. Colin has been playing guitar for nearly 50 years. His first attempts at playing in public were in the folk clubs of Cambridge in the late 60s, and his eyes were opened when he heard Stefan Grossman playing at the 1969 Cambridge Folk Festival. Thereafter it was blues and ragtime guitar that became his passion. Colin was also heavily involved in running the Pied Piper Folk Club, Blue Anchor's base in Osmotherly, North Yorkshire, and one of the most successful folk clubs in the country.

Backshift is a folk group based in Washington, Tyne and Wear. It comprises Terri and Eric Freeman, Ken Tonge and Colin Irvine. The band was formed some fifteen years ago, originally as DLFC Athletic and more recently under its current name. Terri and Eric run the Davy Lamp Folk Club. Washington, at which Ken and Colin are residents, along with a number of other fine singers. Backshift have featured at folk clubs and festivals throughout the region. See them this year at Saltburn Folk Festival.

Terri and Eric first sang together at the Grindon Mill Folk Club in Sunderland in 1968. They also sang at other local clubs, and were soon booked by Frankie O'Neill to appear at a club he was starting. The three of them then went on to open a folk club at The Chesters, again in Sunderland, in 1970. This featured on a recording done by Stewart McFarlane for Radio Teesside.
