What happened here was a microcosm of the whole season. Oliver Perez pitched pretty well but it was clear he ran out of gas in the 6th. There are few things I enjoy more than a 1-0 Mets victory on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. John Maine was spectacular. He started to fatigue in the 7th inning. Maine has given up only 5 runs all season. Two came early in the game against the Phillies. In which the Mets had the huge inning to win the game late. But in his other starts he gave up 1 run in the 6th against the Rockies.

The Mets can't win when they don't score 5 runs and they can't win when Pedro pitches. He is absolutely awful. He puts them in a huge hole every time out, usually giving up only one run in the first inning, this time it was 3. But if it weren't for his bat the Mets would have gotten shut out. Castillo did get one hit, improving his September batting average to .154.

It didn't work out for the Mets this year. The 20th anniversary of the 1986 team didn't prove to be as magical as the original. Maybe it'll happen on the 21st, or 22nd. It will happen, someday soon.
