Backyard Birds Utah: July 2014

http://backyardbirdsutah.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 27, 2014. New Birds in New Mexico. Spring is always a hot birding season, and this past spring I finally got to take advantage of some minor spring birding with a trip to New Mexico. While the trip was not primarily for birding, there was still time for a few minor birding stops in Albuquerque and slightly south of the city. A good many southwestern birds - Gambel's quail. It's an attractive sparrow and one I've been eager to see for years, and I'm glad for the opportunity. On the way south,...

Backyard Birds Utah: Anything But Gross

http://backyardbirdsutah.blogspot.com/2015/04/anything-but-gross.html

Friday, April 17, 2015. Despite the turmoil of the past few months, I've had some minor opportunities to procure major lifers. The first was in late January, when on a local tip, I was able to finally see a bird I've coveted for years - the elusive evening grosbeak. I say elusive because these are heavily nomadic birds that travel between food sources, but because they travel, it can be hit-or-miss to see them. Apparently, however, they are regular winter visitors at Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.

Backyard Birds Utah: Your Bird Feeding Is Now Irrelevant

http://backyardbirdsutah.blogspot.com/2014/10/your-bird-feeding-is-now-irrelevant.html

Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Your Bird Feeding Is Now Irrelevant. Hand-feeding birds is perhaps one of the most amazing experiences any backyard birder can have, but recently, I went beyond offering a peanut to a western scrub-jay. Or a handful of Nyjer to a flock of pine siskins. Both of which I've done, successfully). I fed an emu. Okay, admittedly, the emu wasn't in my backyard (wow, what a yard bird that would be! Still needs to practice his act. It's a simple bit, when he runs out from a holding a...

Backyard Birds Utah: August 2014

http://backyardbirdsutah.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. I adore birds, I do, but there is more to life than living on the wing, and each of us has additional interests, hobbies, and passions. One of mine is reading, and I want to take just a quick moment to share with you another blog I have begun, Eclectic Shelves. There is one bird-related review right near the top of the blog at the moment.). Happy birding, happy reading, happy at whatever makes you happy! Wednesday, August 27, 2014. It wasn't their uniqueness that struck me - I se...

Your Bird of the Week: Wish They All Could Be California Gulls

http://yourbotw.blogspot.com/2009/03/wish-they-all-could-be-california-gulls.html

Your Bird of the Week. Basic bird facts for the unobservant masses. March 4, 2009. Wish They All Could Be California Gulls. First, my apologies to everyone who waited with bated breath for Your Bird of the Week. My time unfortunately was consumed when I was forced to run a department devastated by a mysterious, tuberculosis-like illness. Like all biblical plagues, it struck down the vile and sinful masses and spared the few among us who are good, innocent, and virtuous. D of the Week, th. The cricket swa...

Our neck of the woods...: Three Stages of Song Sparrows

http://wisconsinbirder.blogspot.com/2009/07/three-stages-of-song-sparrows.html

Our neck of the woods. Monday, July 13, 2009. Three Stages of Song Sparrows. The Song Sparrow seemed to be my "bird of the week" last week. First, a colleague mentioned that she had a nest in her holly bush with some just-hatched chicks in it. She invited me over to take a look - and a photo. A pretty common little bird but not every week that you see all the stages in their life cycle! Check out more birds and their photographer's stories at Bird Photography Weekly. Our neck of the woods. Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Bird Photography Weekly - Common Loon on Nest. We've had a pair of loons nesting in the bay of the lake we're on for several years now. Last year they successfully raised one chick. This past weekend, I was lucky enough to catch them changing places on the nest. Not being very well suited to walking on land, it was quite a process! Our neck of the woods. Monday, July 12, 2010. May 20, 2010 - I was on my way out of the house to attend a Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. Field trip hoping to see a Kirtland's Warbler when I took a quick look in the backyard and spotted a Red-headed woodpecker at a feeding station. I had never before had this bird in my yard and could hardly believe my eyes! I was gone all weekend (and DID see the Kirtland's Warbler! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Carpodacus mexicanus, Carduelis tristis. The two most common finches in my backyard are house finches (carpodacus mexicanus) and goldfinches (carduelis tristis). House finches, often mistaken for purple finches, is a native to the western US and was introduced to Long Island, New York in 1940 and have spread prodigiously. They are cheerful singers and are seen in cities and farms at seed feeder stations. American goldfinches feed mainly on seeds and are common at thistle feeders. Put out nesting boxes.

Thursday, August 3, 2017. A Backyard 2,400 Miles in the Making. A great deal of time has passed since my last post, but for great reason. The explanation could be as long and convoluted as the journey that brought me to it, but the end result is the same. My backyard is no longer in Utah, and in July 2016 I moved to Florida. But online birding is also part of my range as it were, and I'm not abandoning it. I hope you'll join me on a new venture, and visit me at a new blog - Be Your Own Birder. Warming te...
