Why Culture is Important to Health | In our own backyard
http://backyarder.org/2014/12/29/why-culture-is-important-to-health
In our own backyard. The history of our home. Book and film recommendations. Why Culture is Important to Health. Beautifully captures the very idea of culture, with all its benefits and modern challenges. This is the original, unedited, version of a newsletter article I wrote that was just released today. I wanted to share this on my blog after it came out in print. Dakota/Lakota/Nakoda people have a term for healthy lifestyle or a good way of life . This entry was posted in Uncategorized. In our own backyard. The history of our home. Book and film recommendations. Anthropology and perpetuating colonialism: Re-thinking museum collections. Everything we make, whether it’s basketry or regalia, comes from our heart, from our feeling of goodness, from our creator making our dances carry on forever. When the regalia don’t dance, they cry. We believe that very strongly. -David Hostler, director, Hoopa Valley Tribal Museum (northern CA)*. What could be wrong with that? In Kennewick, a town on the...

In our own backyard. The history of our home. Book and film recommendations. To live. Well, what happened to them? Where are they living now? Nothing else was ever mentioned. After graduating from college, I moved to Phoenix, AZ and started a sales career with a Fortune 500 company. From there I went into project coordination and program management, also for large corporations. I thought I had it made. What occurred beyond the classroom texts? What happened after the books were closed? When my program in...

Maya Shines | Healing and childhood leukemia | Page 2
https://mayashines.com/page/2
Healing and childhood leukemia. Deep breaths and grounding. Other happenings… Jasper turned 3! Pre birthday party hat breakfast. Maya’s growing out some gorgeous golden curls. We celebrated one year post diagnosis! And as of today only have one year left in treatment! We should probably celebrate again! Some of our favorite friends, two of the four Richard’s girls. That said, I am a changed person. As is everyone in our family, I think. How could we not be, right? Photo by Dzhan Wiley. Will you watch me?

Healing and childhood leukemia. This month, we will be one year past Maya’s diagnosis. Treatment is still going smoothly, minus one scary drug reaction last month. It’s become an easy routine – oral chemo every evening, extra meds on Monday and Tuesday. Once a month a trip to visit our friends at the hospital in Seattle and get IV and/or IT chemo. Other than that…. just life! That said, I am a changed person. As is everyone in our family, I think. How could we not be, right? Photo by Dzhan Wiley. On Sett...

Healing and childhood leukemia. Settling in for a while. Interestingly, this virus suppresses bone marrow production, so her blood counts are low (since all blood cells are produced in the marrow). She’s been sitting right on the edge of needing a red blood transfusion, but hasn’t dropped quite enough yet. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in an alternate world – yesterday I asked if she can just get a transfusion? We’re missing Jasper like crazy. Hiking a couple weeks ago. Deep breaths and grounding.
