비 오는 날 북성부두에 서서 바다를 바라본다. 대성목재 굴뚝에서 연기가 피어 오르고, 원목을 실은 배들이 오가고 있다. 바다와 공장은, 아직 변화하지 않은, 인천의 모습을 간직하고 있다. 인천은 서울의 주변도시로서 많은 공장들이 바닷가에 위치하고 있기 때문에 타 지역과 달리 공장과 갯벌이 어우러진 독특한 분위기를 자아내고 있다. 1957년에 설립된 한국유리 (판유리)가 군산으로 공장을 이전하면서 공장이 철거되었다.우리의 삶과 밀접한 인천의 상징인 슬레이트 구조물이 부셔지는 것을 1년간 보면서 많은 생각을 하게 되었다. 굴뚝과 공장과 모든 것을 그대로 둔 이 독특한 바닷가 공장 지대를 문화지역으로 재탄생 시킬 수 없을까 생각해 본다.
