I sliced the cabbage, potatoes, and onion all into thin strips (a little bigger for the cabbage, smaller for the onion, so everything cooked evenly). I also diced four cloves of garlic, because garlic = love. Down and the pork chops cook through in about 20-30 minutes. (I forgot to time it.) Everything gets salt and pepper at its appropriate cooking stage (when it is the focus of the pan). Y, and I would definitely make it again as it is a one-pan wonder. A Bite in Time. Baguettes & Baozi: January 2009

http://www.baguettesandbaozi.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Turner turns 28 years old today, so only a special birthday cake would do for such a special man. My inspiration for this cake came from the container of Betty Crocker Strawb. T frosting that we were given by former expats who left last spring. Like all foods chock full of preservatives, this frosting is shelf stable for about two years, but I figured now would be a good time to use it. Also, in the fruit stands around the city, the strawberries have been temptingly red and plump these days. After I made...

Baguettes & Baozi: February 2009

http://www.baguettesandbaozi.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

The Cost of a Meal in China. Turner and I went out to eat tonight at a local, family-style restaurant. For a little more than six dollars we ordered the following:. One-liter bottle of Tsingtao beer. Two bowls of rice. Stir-fried eggs with tomatoes. Shredded potato fried with garlic. Sweet and sour pork. Not too shabby and utterly satisfying. When my students ask me if I cook Chinese food at home, I usually say no, because we can get it for cheaper and tastier just a few hundred yards from our door.

Baguettes & Baozi: April 2009

http://www.baguettesandbaozi.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Here is a brief, and I mean brief because Turner took over 400 pictures, showcase from last weekend's whirlwind tour around our province. We went to the Weifang Kite Factory, which was pretty cool. I bought a dragonfly kite! This is the whole group outside the kite factory. This was day one, you can only imagine what we looked like after an average of five hours a day on a bus. Like the Confucius Forest. the most natural green space I have ever seen in China. Just look at all that green! I added the bone...

Don't Look Down: September 2008

http://jmgeorge.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 26, 2008. I've been rockin' a pair of Merrells for about three years now, and I have to say that they have taken a beating pretty well. Unfortunately, they farted out here recently. Honestly, I really wanted a new pair, but just can't bring myself to fork out the 100 bucks for 'em. So.I did some looking around and found a pair of Salomons. That have a similar look. $90 pair of shoes for 40 bucks.not a bad deal, eh? John Michael George Jr. Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Ately, Lucy has b...

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Hey, Hey everybody! This post is coming after a LLLOOOONNNNNGGGGG hiatus. The fam and I have been in Mississippi since the end of May and have been going from "can to can't" since. Now that I'm finally taking the time to write just a bit about our time at home, it's almost time to get back to beautiful Roach, MO (much prettier than it sounds.). At that about 3 or 4 kiddos interjected with, what was for me, a EUREKA! It was the very next week when my 9 year old neice came to me af...

Friday, January 30, 2009. Giving God A Name. So, this past Wednesday Jessi and I were sitting in a "Form and Meaning" class when we were given an assignment that completely caught me off guard. "Give God a name," our teacher said. What? Give God a name? For example, say you move into a new tribal location. Option 1: You can stick with the name "God," but what will they understand this word? What meaning will they ascribe to it? Would you misrepresent the nature of God by the words you choose? Four years ...

http://jmgeorge.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 25, 2008. Anywho, after a few seconds of being at a loss for words, or patience, Roy turned to me and said "what do you think about all this, John Michael? 2 more stories about this guy and this blog is done* *. Oh yeah, also at one point of this 20 minute or so conversation, he told me that if I had read Matthew I would have had known he was coming that day. What? John Michael George Jr. Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Is it just me or did it just look like a giant hot dog stand. Man!
