Originally from Asia, sugar cane has been spread by the Arabs in the eighth century and introduced to the Americas by the Spanish in 1493 during the second voyage of Christopher Columbus, on the occasion of the first European settlement in America on the island of Hispaniola. In France, the “invention” of the distillation process of sugarcane and hence rum, is paid to Father Labat, a French missionary dominicain the Caribbean to create a remedy for fevers.
