Baltimore Backyard: April 2010
http://baltimorebackyard.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Ours seem to bloom about 2 weeks after everyone else's but spring is finally here! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). One couple, one yard: figuring it out as we go along. Yard dimensions of 12 feet wide and 6 feet long. While Matt does much of the hard labor (and has become quite obsessed with gardening) I do most of the planning, vegetable tending and of course, all of the photography. Look for updates of what is in bloom, what has changed and what we are planting throughout the year.
Baltimore Backyard: July 2009
http://baltimorebackyard.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 24, 2009. It is harvest time! We've been harvesting nearly 2 cups a day from our single bush. Matt bought a net meant for ponds to cover the bush and it worked better than the tree/bush net we had last year at keeping out birds. Thursday, July 9, 2009. Figs are growing on the tiny (under 2 ft) fig tree that we planted this May. Very surprising. Wednesday, July 1, 2009. The front yard is looking good! This was tiny (and pink! Last year but it has really grown and is now sort of pinky-purple.

Baltimore Backyard: September 2009

Monday, September 28, 2009. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). One couple, one yard: figuring it out as we go along. My husband Matt and I live in a single family house (built 1936) in Northeast Baltimore City with our three dogs, Violet (a whippet), Pippi (a tiny dachshund) and Elvis (a pug). We are lucky enough to have a backyard that is 45 feet wide and 236 feet long. To put it in perspective, the house I had rented before we got married had the more typical Baltimore City rowhouse. Wednesday, April 22, 2009. I was happy to get a break from the rain that was long enough to snap a quick picture of our dogwood. I think it is really doing well! Saturday, April 18, 2009. Matt went and picked up a Earth Machine. Anyone have any composting tips? What container do you use in your kitchen for scraps? Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Two dogwoods, a redbud, two crape myrtles, a Japanese cherry, the two pawpaw and two figs, one (or is it two? Friday, April 3, 2009. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My hus...

Food Maven: Mixer love
http://foodmaven.blogspot.com/2010/08/mixer-love.html
Saturday, August 07, 2010. And can I just mention how much I love having 2 mixers? I have this new snazzy Breville one. Which made awesome icing and my bright aqua Kitchenaid. I've had for years. I might have an old, 1930s era, strangely laid out kitchen but I love having great equipment to work with. It made making cupcakes a breeze and I didn't have to stop in the middle to wash out bowls or beaters. It felt decadent. Rachel is the creator of the recipe blog Coconut and Lime. I wrote a book!

Food Maven: March 2010
http://foodmaven.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 04, 2010. I had the opportunity to attend a media dinner at Milan, a new restaurant in Little Italy. The space is beautiful, very modern and white and seems intimate for the large space. Matt's steak (it was the one with the lobster) was great but the sauce was oddly thick and bland and the mashed potatoes were good, but didn't taste like lobster. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Thursday, May 14, 2009. Well-Preserved: Recipes and Techniques for Putting Up Small Batches of Seasonal Foods. I have never canned but have accumulated quite a number of books about canning. Maybe this will be the year? Is interesting because it is a combination of canning directions/recipes and recipes that use the items after they were canned. Now I just need to get some equipment and the nerve to can. Sunday, May 10, 2009. Book Review, Let Me Eat Cake. By Leslie F. Miller. Tuesday, May 05, 2009. Is th...

Food Maven: November 2009

Sunday, November 29, 2009. Holiday Gift Idea: Cook or Be Cooked. Last night rather than actually cooking, I ate Chinese take out and played Cook or be Cooked. A new game for the Wii where you virtually cook actual recipes. Now, as someone who cooks in real life an awful lot, I wouldn't say that pretending to cook was the most relaxing way to spend an evening but once we got the hang of it, it was fun. The game play is more realistic than it is in the Cooking Mama. Saturday, November 21, 2009. Bring a lar...
Food Maven: July 2009
http://foodmaven.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 31, 2009. I read Novella Carpenter's book Farm City. It also made me grateful that I although I live in Baltimore City, I have a large yard where I can raise fruits and vegetables without squatting on someone else's land. It reinforced my interest in bees but I can't imagine forcing my neighbors to deal with noise and smell that come with raising pigs or poultry. Perhaps because I am a homeowner. Wednesday, July 15, 2009. I had an excuse to get one of these fancy, detailed gelatin molds.

Monday, August 24, 2009. I have been a little salad crazed this summer. Part of it is that I have been working on a huge recipe development project that not only takes up a lot of time but leaves me with a lot of main courses to eat. The other part is that the weather here in Baltimore has been so humid and so changeable, I swear it has ruined my appetite for anything other than cold salads. What are you craving this summer? Wednesday, August 12, 2009. So far, we love it! Perfect for me because I work fr...

Tales from The Baltimore Bachelorette! Dishing the dirt about being single in the city of Baltimore. Wednesday, September 21, 2011. I was glad. I was proud I made it through. He always says "I'm not going to ask you to do anything i'm not absolutely sure you can do." And while sometimes I hate it, and desperately try to even hate him for making me do it (although I cant because he's too damn nice! I always make it through. So what is slowing me down? Baltimore Backyard
Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Ours seem to bloom about 2 weeks after everyone else's but spring is finally here! Sunday, February 7, 2010. Another huge snow storm here in Baltimore, possibly the biggest one since they started keeping track of storm totals about 120 years ago. About 3 feet of snow fell in 24 hours. That is more snow in a single day then we often get for a whole year! I don't want to be trapped here for a whole week! Saturday, December 19, 2009. Wednesday, November 4, 2009. So, tomatoes are my...
