Our House of Straw: 05/26/14
http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2014_05_26_archive.html
Monday, May 26, 2014. Scott returned yesterday from his most recent trip to Torrey. He spent four hard days at work on, you guessed it, fencing. The first project was to design and build a gate that would provide access to the llamas. Next he strung the smooth wire on the cedar posts around the orchard and put two galvanized gates in place. Here it is, ready to greet them after the hay has been cut this summer. Our together trip to Torrey brought big changes to the landscaping. The first thing we complet...

Our House of Straw: Cozy Llama Shed
http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2015/02/cozy-llama-shed.html
Friday, February 13, 2015. The floor of the llama shed is concrete, so the first step was to form the slab and put down gravel. Tyler Torgerson's crew did the concrete work. Posts to support the roof were eventually placed on the exposed All Thread rods. The surface of the slab has a rough texture. Our hope is that this will wear down the llamas' toe nails when they come inside to eat. This means we won't need to trim their nails when it's time to hit the trail. August 15, 2015 at 4:35 PM. Dead blow hamm...

Our House of Straw: 02/05/15
http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2015_02_05_archive.html
Thursday, February 5, 2015. As you might have noticed, we have been conspicuously absent from the blogosphere since our last post about Rusty. That is because, even though he did everything we asked him to do—two surgeries, physical therapy, new feeding regimes, medication—he didn’t make it. It may seem strange to some folks, but we have had and continue to have a very difficult time getting beyond that. Other times it was the “stairs game.”. He was a good sleeper. If a patch of sun appeared anywhere...

Our House of Straw: 10/28/13

Monday, October 28, 2013. My favorite part of a creating a list is checking off the items as they are completed. I’ve even contemplated adding “Make a list” to each one I compile so I’m able to check off something as soon as the list is written. It’s a thought. Now that our construction to-do list is getting shorter and shorter, I’m compelled to make an accounting of everything we accomplish during each Torrey visit. Our most recent trip was fifteen days long. Here’s the list:. Checked the yurt for holes.

Our House of Straw: An Organized Garage
http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2014/07/an-organized-garage.html
Saturday, July 26, 2014. The fact that we have never had a garage is certainly included in the category of first-world complaints. But, now that we are here in Torrey, we have a garage. My most recent first-world complaint has been that the garage is piled so high with our possessions (another first-world circumstance), there is no room for our car and truck (yet another first-world situation). We began by taking everything out of the garage. This was mostly tools used in house construction. Then...Where...

Tuesday, February 10, 2015. A quick Google search reveals many famous lasts—last call, last words, last meal. And, if you play games of trivia, you might encounter questions like, what was the last state to join the union? Hawaii. Or, what is the last Greek letter? Omega Or even, what was the last act to perform at Woodstock? We are not on any list of famous lasts, but one might ask, what was the last room to be finish? Scott used Ultramarine Blue oxide pigment from The Earth Pigments Company. After six ...

Our House of Straw: Moving - Day Two
http://maryandscotthouseofstraw.blogspot.com/2014/07/moving-day-two.html
Friday, July 25, 2014. Moving - Day Two. The next morning, June 5. We loaded the car and truck with things we wanted to move ourselves and off we drove, arriving in Torrey six hours later. We introduced the llamas to their newly-fenced pasture, released the cats to explore their new digs, stashed the fresh food in the fridge and took a short walk in the neighborhood before it got dark. According to the original plan, Alpha Moving would arrive on the 7. The new pantry awaiting a finish coat. Drainback Sol...

Our House of Straw: 01/25/14

Saturday, January 25, 2014. The Return of Doug and Shanna. When Doug and Shanna visit, everyone is happy, not only for their great company and their wonderful help with construction, but the food really improves. From the floor to the peak of the king post trusses, the interior height of our house is about sixteen feet. Scott felt this storage loft needed a partition to screen these items from view. The loft before the screen. The frame of the gate to the loft. The loft with the screen and the gate.
