The instructor tells us. Imagine you’re on the telephone, holding. An ice cream with the other hand. Get into your fighting stance. You have four scoops. Strawberry, chocolate, rum and raisin,. Mint choc chip) so don’t drop. Your guard. We’re not pretending we’re ninjas here. But you have to breathe like one,. Push the air between your teeth and clench. Those glutes. Now jab. Cross jab cross aim for the solar plexus,. Ribs, chest. Upper cut to the chin, if you do it right. Bob and duck when you have to.

Let me tell you a ghost story…. December 16, 2014. December 16, 2014. Or perhaps a few inexplicable extra pounds? The mystery intensifies one night when we are lying in bed and Greg feels me tap his shoulder forcefully. But it’s not me – I am lying next to him with my arms stretched behind my head, half-asleep. There are plenty of bird poems out there to enjoy, from the obvious. To the unusual. There’s Maya Angelou’s caged bird. And Emily Dickinson’s hope. There are love poems like Craig Arnold’s ‘Bird-Understander’. And the deliciously acerbic ‘Feathers’. By Lorraine Mariner (one of my favourites). Rhian Edwards. H is for Hawk. Emily Blew...

October 8, 2015. October 8, 2015. Invariably, I’ve learnt to write that first sentence – to be unafraid of its imperfection. I’m lucky. I passed my exams. That first sentence now can be written, and. I’m happiest when I am writing, and it’s usually through writing that I work out what it is I’m trying to say. The ideas come (partly, at least) through their expression. I have a long runway, but once I get going, I can fly. The Weather in the Streets. I’m thrilled, and excited, and grateful. Cramps your he...
