mainly mongoose: January 2013
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Saturday, January 12, 2013. Scarred for life (or what's left of it). 8216;Well, it’s going to leave a scar’, the doctor said as we stared at the gaping wound on my lower leg. He wanted to stitch it. I was trying to avoid having needles poked through my flesh. 8216;I can cope with that’, I said calmly (secretly thinking: Ah ha. Now I can. People who ask about my scars). Mishandle a breadknife; yes, I.
mainly mongoose: A festivity of stripes
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-festivity-of-stripes.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Sunday, January 5, 2014. A festivity of stripes. Then the Ethiopian put his five fingers close together (there was plenty of black left on his new skin still) and pressed them all over the Leopard, and wherever the five fingers touched they left five little black marks, all close together. You can see them on any Leopard's skin. 8216; How the Leopard got his spots’. From The Just So Stories. Is not a...
mainly mongoose: Avoiding the bathroom
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2013/09/avoiding-bathroom.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Sunday, September 29, 2013. Before I begin, I’d like to apologise if this blog post is a little. er. disjointed. Or a touch confused. You see I’m currently sitting hunched in front of my computer with my legs tightly crossed, jiggling. While half my brain ponders this blog post, the other half is quietly chanting, Sheldon-like,. 8216;I am the Master of my bladder.’. Actually I don’t even. Frogs Those...
mainly mongoose: July 2012
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Sunday, July 29, 2012. Outside my door is a gang of heavily armed assailants. They’re stamping their feet, rattling their weapons and chanting war songs. Five are picketed outside the window, but I know they’ve reinforcements waiting in the shrubbery. They’ve come for provender, and they won’t go until they get some. Alright, I admit it, they’re only rodents. But they’re SERIOUSLY scary rodents.
mainly mongoose: Mongooses, mambas and me
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2014/02/mongooses-mambas-and-me.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Monday, February 10, 2014. Mongooses, mambas and me. As soon as I arrived at the group I knew something was wrong. Then I saw the cause. Ah, a black mamba. Black mambas ( Dendroaspis polylepis. They zip along at 5 m (15 ft) per second, through the branches or down on terra firma. Photo by Michael Ransburg. Absurdly, black mambas ( Dendroaspis polylepis. Photo posted on Flickr by Viperskin. Although a...
mainly mongoose: Oh, the ingratitude
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2014/01/oh-ingratitude.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Thursday, January 23, 2014. Oh, the ingratitude. Everyone has days when they feel unappreciated. You know how it is: those around you not only take your help for granted, they then go on to presume. Well this is one of those days for me. What’s caused this sad state of affairs? This is not the problem. The joys of being lawn-mowerless. But my grievances don’t rest with any of these critters. Now tawn...
mainly mongoose: August 2012
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Saturday, August 25, 2012. The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it. I’m missing my ornaments! Oh for the pitter-patter of little gerbil feet; the sonorous yap of geckos brawling over my mealworms; the reproachful glower of an almost-stepped-upon toad! Where have all my wild friends gone, you’re wondering? Taken to the hills in a spine-tingling, pre-tsunami exodus? Sure about the BO).

mainly mongoose: January 2015
http://mainlymongoose.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
The joys and tribulations of a field biologist (and hermit) studying mongooses in the South African bush. Friday, January 23, 2015. What, a new blog post? Yep, that’s right. I’ve been driven to it by the hardships of my life. Normally I can handle my self-imposed solitude; month after month alone in the bush, my only human converse, ‘Fill it up with Super, thanks’. But sometimes it all gets too difficult and I just can’t go on without the comfort of a sympathetic ear (or rather, eye). Hey, play nice!
