Thursday, November 06, 2003. SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, MANCHESTER ACADEMY, OCTOBER 03. IT IS an odd crowd who go to see the Super Furry Animals; strange fans. Oddly enough, despite having never met the pint carrier before in his life, it turns out that yes, his new chum is correct; he is from Caergwrle. The main purpose of the evening is, of course, to run through the current Phantom Power album, and we are lead quickly towards Golden Retriever. But these are no carbon copies; they band seem to delight in...

Wednesday, October 22, 2003. So then. Welcome to Barbelith Reviews. We've got a number of plans for the site, so expect it to be in flux for a good few months, but the basic skeleton is present and correct. Music - albums, singles, EPs. Books - fiction, non-fic, e-books. Comics - collected editions, one-shots, mainstream and indie. Film - cinema, DVD. TV - fiction and non-fic (again). Video Games - licenses, niche titles. Outside - gigs, shows, plays, demonstrations.

Saturday, April 02, 2005. Starting some weekly reviews. I know that this blog has pretty much been sitting silent for a while, but I STILL like the idea of it, so I'm going to drop reviews in of the first batch of comics I read weekly, and maybe some trade paperbacks as I read them. I will be posting them elsewhere as well, but I think this will be a good place to get things moving:. This issue was all set-up to let us get to to know Flash's Rogue's Gallery AGAIN. Astonishing X-Men: A transition issue in...

Saturday, January 17, 2004. The Basil Wolverton Reader. The other thing that struck me as I read the book was how much Wolverton's early style reminded me of R. Crumb's early comics work. While I have never read Crumb saying that he was influenced by Wolverton (he usually cites MAD and the Disney comics as his early influences), it seems to me that Crumb drew a lot of his layout and figure style from either Wolverton or artists who used Wolverton's style. Tuesday, January 13, 2004. The #300 book sold alm...

Wednesday, January 28, 2004. The Gallery, Oxo Tower Wharf, January 04. What was odd though is that one of the photos, apparently given no special position, is of the wife of murdered reporter Daniel Pearl. Marianne hasn't forgiven his murderers, quite the opposite. She wrote to the Pakistani government asking for the death penalty for his killers and when one of them asked to see her she refused. So quite what her portrait was doing in an exhibition on forgiveness I don't know.

Monday, December 22, 2003. Volcano High, MTV. I think, by and large, the general public has come to accept that MTV (Music Tele-Vision) can no longer be held responsible for their music video interests. So when commercials started airing on said network for a martial arts film called Volcano High, I wasn't really surprised. Volcano High was originally a Korean martial arts movie, Whasango. As for the hip-hop stars dub, well, if you don't like dubs, you won't like this one, obviously, but as I said, it ma...

Saturday, July 10, 2004. Well, we thought it was a good idea at the time. Unfortunately, the other 99.8% of the board ended up showing a complete lack of interest, and it eventually seemed like we were simply talking to ourselves. If you're reading this and think it's *still* a good idea, feel free to drop me a line at the email address on my blog. Or, if you're a member, send me a private message on Barbelith.
