Our grown up gapyear. Once again, we fled the city with all it’s traffic, noise and, most memorable, smells! We opted for some bungalows on the beach at Long Beach on the west coast and weren’t disappointed with our new home, set in pretty gardens with a riot of fuchsia bougainvillea scenting the air, just a few steps from the sand and with a lot of restaurants and beach bars within easy reach. We managed to book a very cheap flight to Can Tho from where we planned to overland and catch the ferry to Phu Quoc, flying straight there is quite expensive for us flashpackers unless you book much further in advance. Our grown up gapyear. The Mermaid restaurant in Hoi An is so good it deserves a special mention all of its own. As usual we consulted The Lonely Planet (Southeast Asia on a shoestring edition for tight arses like ourselves! And went to the top recomendation and were not disappointed! Our grown up gapyear. Goodbye Indonesia….for a while…. Our final glimpse of Indo! Uluwatu, on the Bukit Peninsula is on the southwest coast and as such is the perfect spot for multicoloured sunsets. Our guesthouse rested on a cliff overlooking the sea with breathtaking views of the breaking waves below. Our grown up gapyear. Arriving from the boat (which annoyingly bypasses Gili Air initially to go to Gili T and back again – why? Who knows…. Just to delay my sunworshipping I think), you are picked up by the local taxi which will take you anywhere on this tiny island for 100k rupiah (about a fiver).
