Barnabas File: August 2014

http://barnabasfile.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Sunday, August 31, 2014. During August I spent two weeks in the Kansas City area and northern Missouri related to my work with Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Seven of those days were at Conception Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, located on a beautiful site in the middle of rolling farmland. The life of a brother is centered in contemplation but he does not ignore the world. He seeks a proper balance between the two. Prayer does ...Those...

Barnabas File: Take No Thought

http://barnabasfile.blogspot.com/2015/05/take-no-thought.html

Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Monday, May 11, 2015. Fifty years ago this month I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. I had some idea of what was coming in the next few months. I would graduate from college that same weekend. Rita and I would be married the following month and then almost immediately we would leave for my first posting at Fort Lee, Virginia, for the Basic Officer Training Course. Some days I feel like Abraham! Now listen, you ...

Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Thursday, January 22, 2015. Millennial Expectations and the Church. A great deal is written about Millennials. And their expectations of life. This evokes much discussion that ranges from “the sky is falling” view to “who cares? I don’t believe the end is near, but I also realize that those of us in ministry need to understand the perspectives and inclinations of an emerging generation of leaders. In a recent article,. Respondents “would...

Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Friday, May 30, 2014. Self-Care: A Personal Responsibility. The annual physical examination reminds me that I am the one who is ultimately responsible for my physical health. I can share observations, ask questions, get advice (and prescriptions) that will help make my life more pleasant, and then take appropriate action. Do I look forward to it? No, but it is part of being a responsible person. Just as we take responsibility for our physical ...

Barnabas File: April 2015

http://barnabasfile.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Thursday, April 23, 2015. The Reality of Change. Change is a word laden with negative connotations for many of us. We often fear change, but change is a part of life. We find a new job or calling, we move to a new town or house, we experience sickness, we have children and they grow up and move out (or move back in). In life, nothing is static. Change is a sign of life. A vine is a living thing—it changes and grows or it dies. Although we may ...

Corner Reflections: June 2010

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Saturday, June 12, 2010. Our family recently returned from vacation on Pawleys Island in South Carolina. It is a wonderful place that provides us with a sense of rest and relaxation that we so long for during the summer. We have been going there for a number of years and all four of us have grown accustomed to the local scenery and establishments. And each evening we enjoy eating out. We have discovered some great restaurants that we visit each year—the Litchfie...We also...

Corner Reflections: November 2010

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Friday, November 26, 2010. The day after Thanksgiving has traditionally been a day when my family eats leftovers from Thanksgiving Dinner and decorates for Christmas. We may visit a local store for their holiday sales, but never really take much time indulging in Black Friday. This year we added a new element to our holiday preparations. I’m not sure who among the four of us had the most fun. One thing for sure, I was as “giddy as a school boy” to us...The tree sits in ou...

Corner Reflections: December 2009

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Monday, December 21, 2009. I have performed parent/child dedications throughout my twenty plus years of ministry. Usually such events happen on Mother’s Day and occasionally Father’s Day, and sometimes on Sundays closer to a child’s birth. The parent/child dedication I participated in today had quite a unique twist. The ceremony itself was brief. Afterwards we shared a wonderful meal and great conversation, catching up on the time that had passed since we had last met.

Corner Reflections: Summer Plans

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2011/06/summer-plans.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Saturday, June 11, 2011. Recently my wife shared with us at a meal her list of activities she wanted to fulfill during her summer break as an elementary school teacher. Among those activities she listed fishing. That’s an activity she will complete with her brother at a fishing hole yet to be decided. If we are lucky we may even get to have a fish fry as a result. Movies with my daughter. I’m not sure what movies will come out this summer but I’m sure we c...Scheduling al...

Corner Reflections: Out of Christmas, Into Routine

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2010/12/out-of-christmas-into-routine.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Out of Christmas, Into Routine. Things can change a whole lot in the span of a month. It wasn’t quite a month ago that I wrote of picking out a Christmas tree at a Christmas tree farm and starting a new family tradition with our family. With great anticipation we brought the tree home. There was a lot to look forward to. Are we looking for a perfection we simply can never expect to find? If I read the Christmas story from Luke there was a lot o...

Corner Reflections: Thinking, Saying, Doing!

http://tommyvalentine.blogspot.com/2011/08/thinking-saying-doing.html

Weaving Faith and Life Together! Saturday, August 27, 2011. Thinking, Saying, Doing! Gandhi once said, "Happiness occurs when what you think, what you say, and what you do, are in perfect harmony.". I don’t know what Gandhi would say, but filtering my thoughts seems like a plausible place to start. How about the saying part? I like the quote by Gandhi. I think he’s right. "Happiness occurs when what you think, what you say, and what you do, are in perfect harmony.". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Words in Search of Wisdom: A Tale of Two Churches

http://wordsinsearch.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-tale-of-two-churches.html

Words in Search of Wisdom. Monday, September 1, 2014. A Tale of Two Churches. Well, then, what have I been doing in a traditional Southern Baptist Church? Serving the same church for thirty years can make you think the whole world is like that, but it’s not. Being in three different churches the past eight years has been a learning and growing experience for me. God wants, and the world needs, lots of different kinds of churches. David C. George. Comments from a Christ-follower on things that matter to him. Saturday, March 17, 2018. A Rich and Mythic Legacy. Not only is Patrick an iconic figure, he has also become linked with what we know call Celtic Christianity. Thomas Cahill’s book How the Irish Saved Civilization. Introduced the rich tradition of the Celtic and specifically Irish contributions to a mass audience. George Hunter drew on similar ideas for The Celtic Way of Evangelism. This post originally appeared on this site on March 14, 2012).
