Barnacle Mike's Boatbuilding Blog

Barnacle Mike's Boatbuilding Blog. Building a 1953-designed Glen-L Utility and a 1954-designed Glen-L Zip. Saturday, August 15, 2015. Seat blocking and epoxy's love affair with tape. It has been a busy week with band rehearsals and back-to-school shopping, but last night I did manage to get the blocking for the rear seat attached. Epoxy likes blue tape. That's a mess to clean up another day. 16 clamps to install 2 pieces of seat blocking? Port side blocking attached. Starboard side blocking attached.

Michael's Boatbuilding Blog: Musings on how to make the seats

http://www.barnaclemikeboats.blogspot.com/2015/08/musings-on-how-to-make-seats.html

Building a 1953-designed Glen-L Utility and a 1954-designed Glen-L Zip. Saturday, August 1, 2015. Musings on how to make the seats. The original Glen-L plans call for a seat riser that runs from the forward frame to the transom, passing through this cutout in Frame #1. So, I'm in this "blocking" phase. The next step is to attach blocking on the sides of the hull to support each end of the rear seat. (Basic "bench" seats are also called "thwarts" in nautical terminology.). Nope Simple blocking it will be.

Michael's Boatbuilding Blog: July 2015

http://www.barnaclemikeboats.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Building a 1953-designed Glen-L Utility and a 1954-designed Glen-L Zip. Thursday, July 30, 2015. With the blocking in place, it was simple and easy matter to attach the quarter knees. Like the blocking, the quarter knees are attached to the hull with only thickened epoxy. At this time, I'm not planning to add screws. The next item on the agenda is to attach blocking for the rear seat. Starboard quarter knee clamped into place while the epoxy cures. Starboard quarter knee, clamps removed. I used the extra...

Building a 1953-designed Glen-L Utility and a 1954-designed Glen-L Zip. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. With the sounds of the Hallelujah Chorus still echoing in my ears, I'm happy to say that fiberglassing work on the Utility hull is finally completed. I've added a second layer of epoxy to the whole thing, and the next step will be to sand it down smooth in preparation for painting. Until then, at least, it's nice and shiny. The gap between the hull and the level shows a hook of approximately 1/16" depth. I've g...

Building a 1953-designed Glen-L Utility and a 1954-designed Glen-L Zip. Monday, August 4, 2014. When we last left off at the previous blog post, it was time for a lot of sanding on the Utility's hull. That is exactly what I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks. I’ve done enough sanding, in fact, that I’ve come to a new realization:. Up to this point in my life, I did not fully grasp the true. Definition of the word “dust.”. In any case, there is still more sanding to be done.

Clipper's Vera Cruise Build: I Now Have a Boat! Skinning Completed

http://veracruise.blogspot.com/2015/06/i-now-have-boat-skinning-completed.html

Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Documenting the construction of a classically styled Glen L Marine cabin cruiser named "Some Other Time". Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. I Now Have a Boat! Well, technically, I have a boat. She wouldn't sink (immediately) but she also wouldn't last long in her current condition. But that's okay, because another major milestone has been reached and I am happy. Rather than get all long winded, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves for most of this.

More Fairing And Struggling For Material. One of the challenges of writing a blog is finding enough material to write about. I believe this problem occurs for all forms of writing. For me it also manifests itself in my lack of participation in the Glen L builder's forum. Another challenge I face personally is worryin...

Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Documenting the construction of a classically styled Glen L Marine cabin cruiser named "Some Other Time". Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Did Someone Say Sanding? This is just a short blog because I've been doing nothing except sanding. Before applying the fiberglass, I want to insure that the exterior hull surface is relatively flat. I only have two photos this time, one of me sanding. It doesn't show me in a flattering light, but what the heck! The othe...

Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Documenting the construction of a classically styled Glen L Marine cabin cruiser named "Some Other Time". Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Saturday, July 18, 2015. Transom And Other Miscellaneous Work. Most of these last couple of weeks has been devoted to working on the mahogany veneer for the transom although I did take several days off to have a mini vacation. Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Documenting the construction of a classically styled Glen L Marine cabin cruiser named "Some Other Time". Clipper's Vera Cruise Build. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Miscellaneous Hull Work - Part 2. There will be plenty more of this later after the fiberglass in in place, but that's for a future blog entry. For the next attempt, I purchased a 1/8" sample of mahogany from Woodcraft. The material was somewhat less dense than the veneer material. I placed it in a a plastic tub...As yo...

Here are some more shots of the longitudinals during the encapsulation process. In the shot above with the breasthook, I am still planing on adding an additional piece on the aft end of the breasthook. Therefore, this edge is not being encapsulated. Carl (a.k.a. Clipper). More Fairing At The Bow. The tool was clamped to the chine so it wouldn't move and then I used the tool as a guide for my Japanese pull saw to cut slits.
