Bird and wildlife sightings from the Barnsley recording area. Monday, 18 May 2015. Results from the spring Willow Tit Survey were excellent and far more than expected. The main focus was the Dearne Nature Improvement Area (NIA) which roughly is north to Rabbit Ings, east to Barnburgh/Sprotborough, south to Swinton/Wentworth and west to Worsbrough. The NIA covers 200 sq km and Willow Tit were found in 43 sqs. So, thanks to everyone who put records on this blog or sent me info via email and text. Winterset...

The adult drake Lesser Scaup. Spent most of the day on the boathouse slipway. Willow Tit 1 and Mallard 6 small young. Oystercatchers - north pair have lost their young but south pair have 2 young. Wombwell Ings mid AM. Broomhill Flash late AM. Singing males- 1 Song Thrush, 7 Chiffchaff, 6 Willow Warbler, 3 Sedge Warbler, 2 Reed Warbler, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Blackcap. 14 Avocet. First hour was quality with cracking views of a hunting female Merlin, 2 Scaup, male Smew and a total 18 Curlew west. even managed this of the Smew!
