Barwon Blog: May 2015
http://barwonblogger.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Anything and everything to do with the Barwon River. 26 May, 2015. Farmland in the Western District. All this was scant consolation to the farmers and graziers of the Western District during the 19th and 20th centuries whose livelihood was at risk every time water levels rose, and by mid-January, 1953 they were at crisis point. Something had to be done, as the Colac Shire President declared, to stop the "creeping terror"! Low-lying land at the northern end of Lough Calvert. The start of the Woady Yaloak ...

Anything and everything to do with the Barwon River. 19 May, 2015. In a previous post I looked at Wormbete Station. Looking north west across Lake Murdeduke. In February 1854 Arthur married Lucy Rout at Murdeduke. One John Wingate Rout was also married on the property at the same time. Presumably both were maternal relatives of the Hopkins' via their mother. Like his brother John, Arthur served on the Winchelsea Shire Council and he and Lucy raised their family of three daughters at Murdeduke. Unlike Wor...

Anything and everything to do with the Barwon River. 21 February, 2015. Over the last week, I have spent quite a few hours paddling on the river. On Sunday, after hearing from friends that they had spotted a seal in the section of the river immediately below the lower breakwater, I headed down from town for a look. Float belonging to a commercial eel trap on the river. The licences cover areas from Queen's Park to Lake Connewarre and part of the river downstream of the lake. Something breaking the surface.

Anything and everything to do with the Barwon River. 26 May, 2014. Branching out - Mout Doran. From the rich reefs at Steiglitz on Sutherland's Creek to the deep gravel leads at Morrisons on the Moorabool River West Branch or Dolly's and Tea Tree Creeks, there was plenty of gold to be found for those who were willing to work for it during the Victorian gold rush. Gully running past the mine. Main branch of the tunnel. Deeper inside the tunnel. From local descriptions, such a mine would have been worked b...

Go, See, Shop, Drink, Play and Explore Geelong. Blending into the scenery like a chameleon and spanning far into the distance, I ponder how it is that this 738 metre long, historically significant structure sits literally in our backyard yet many a local are oblivious to its existence. Image: Kevin Patterson (2000) National Trust Australia. Decommissioned in 1993 the aqueduct and pedestrian footbridge that runs its length has sadly fallen into disrepair and is unstable for public access. Although you...
