Basstravaganza2012

Wednesday, November 28, 2012. David Thompson, The Pathfinder. Patron Saint of the Basstravaganza. Anyone who visits eastern BC is traveling in the footsteps of David Thompson. In the days before machines were giants and men were puny, David Thompson was a giant among men. The first man tall enough to see over the Rockies. Described by some as "the greatest land geographer who ever lived". Imagine that the year is 1790. But where was the source of the great Columbia, in the maze of BC mountain ranges?

Basstravaganza2012: May 2012

http://basstravaganza2012.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 28, 2012. The Island Nation - Holguin Redux. This is the last day we will be doing volunteer labor at the building site. There is a survey crew setting levels on the foundation we cleared out the other day. They put little pads of cement on top of the foundation to mark the level. Another guy is cutting up pieces of polished stone with a rock saw. The building is coming along, but suddenly there is hardly anybody around. But a fraction of an instant after I say that I moved to Canada all the ...

Basstravaganza2012: Kennedy River - Sept

http://basstravaganza2012.blogspot.com/2012/11/kennedy-river-sept.html

Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Kennedy River - Sept. In any case, an instant patch with a tire tube kit is all it takes. Suddenly, for the first time ever, I have a pontoon boat that holds air in both toons! Although Sommers went to jail for a little while, of course nothing was done to invalidate the crooked TFLs, which still form the backbone of the forest industry in BC. End Hwy 4 Rant & & &. The Kennedy R flows into a lagoon at the top of the lake. This is adventure in the great outdoors! I carry all my...

Basstravaganza2012: Kennedy River - August

http://basstravaganza2012.blogspot.com/2012/11/kennedy-river-august.html

Monday, November 26, 2012. Kennedy River - August. The side members of the rack are modeled after the rakish tailfins of the 1957 DeSoto. This will give the pontoon greater stability at hi velocity, and should decrease the shock wave if I ever break the speed of sound. And beside that, they look cool. Here you can see a few gnarled old verteran trees still standing, with the clearcut (now replanted as second growth forest) behind, and the remainder of the "leave strip" blown down into the lake. Along the...

Basstravaganza2012: September 2012

http://basstravaganza2012.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 30, 2012. If I hired an auto shop at $100/hr to go over my car and replace everything that the magic wands said needed replacing, I could easily spend $100,000, and still maybe not find the cause of the sputters and stallouts. The shop tells me that the problem is my ignition wiring, so I tell them to go ahead and replace wires, plugs, rotor, etc. 500 later the car idles better, but on the way home it stalls dead again. This was such a giveaway that it drew the attention of The Dewd him...

Basstravaganza2012: March 2012

http://basstravaganza2012.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 8, 2012. Note for 2012 blogoshperians. I am trying a new format this year, copying someone else's format with black bacground and white text. But it seems to have changed the settings for image display. Since the pix are the only interesting part of the blog this is important. I will try to fix this. Of course, the new fishing season must be christened with a ceremonial First Slurpee! I fished for a few hours at Elk Lake, hooked one big trout, and lost it. By afternoon I am recovered from...

Basstravaganza2011

Saturday, October 29, 2011. This year I decide to leave the Bullship behind and take only my pontoon boat, plus my bike so that I can leave it downstream, float down to it, and pedal back up to my car. Could not find the big chartreuse rapalas like the ones that were hot last year, so I have bought a can of spray paint and created my own. Instead I head over to the Deschutes downstream from the Wickiup dam, where I have a special campsite beside the river. I row about ½ mile upstream and start throw...
